  • Overweight or obesity: Excess pressure on the abdomen can weaken the LES.
  • Pregnancy: The growing uterus can increase pressure on the abdomen, which may weaken the LES.
  • Smoking and alcohol: Smoking can weaken the LES and increase acid production. Alcohol can increase stomach acid production and weaken the LES.
  • Spicy foods: These foods can increase acid production in the stomach. Caffeine can weaken the LES.
