In the history of Test and ODI cricket, many batsmen have scored centuries in their debut or last match, but only a few players have got the opportunity to repeat this feat in both the first and last matches of any format. In the 147-year history of Test cricket, 5 batsmen (criteria is at least two matches) have been able to achieve this feat, which includes Australia’s Greg Chappell, William Ponsford and Reginald Hough, apart from India’s Mohammad Azharuddin and England’s Alastair Cook. In ODI International, the number of batsmen who have done such a feat is even less.

In the history of ODI cricket spanning more than five decades, only two batsmen – England’s Dennis Amiss and West Indies’ Desmond Haynes – have been able to score centuries in their first and last ODI. The special thing is that both of them have been equally successful in both formats, Test and ODI. Both started their ODI career by scoring a century against Australia and both played as openers. On the other hand, Hans played 116 Tests and 238 ODIs for the West Indies team between 1978 and 1994. In Tests, he/she has 7487 runs (average 42.29) to his/her name, including 18 centuries. In ODIs, this Caribbean batsman scored 8648 runs at an average of 41.37, including 17 centuries.

Talking about the technically sound batsman Amiss, he/she started his/her ODI career on 24 August 1972 by scoring a century against Australia. In this match of 55-55 overs, he/she scored 103 runs in 134 balls with the help of 9 fours. In the early days of ODI cricket, in this innings, he/she scored runs at a strong strike rate of 76.86 and played a significant role in giving England a 6-wicket victory. In July 1973, Amiss scored 100 runs against New Zealand in Swansea and then scored 137 runs against India on 7 June 1975, which was his/her first century of the World Cup and also his/her highest score in this format.

The West Indies team won the match and Haynes was the Player of the Match. On 5 March 1994, he/she played his/her last ODI in Port of Spain. In this match against England, he/she scored 115 runs in 114 balls with the help of 14 fours and again became the Player of the Match by making a significant contribution to the team’s victory.
