India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said that we confirm that we have received a note verbale regarding the extradition request from the Bangladesh High Commission. We have no comment on this matter at this time. Tauheed Hossain, advisor on foreign affairs to the interim government of Bangladesh, made this request through a note verbale to the Indian government, according to local media reports. Tauheed Hussain told reporters that we have sent a note verbal to India requesting to send back Sheikh Hasina.

Why did Sheikh Hasina have to come to India?
On August 5, a student-led movement ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power after weeks of protests and clashes that left more than 600 people dead. Hasina, 76, fled to India and an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

On 9 December, Sheikh Hasina accused Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, of being the “mastermind” of the student protests that led to his/her removal from power. At the same time, he/she also alleged that this protest was closely designed to overthrow his/her government. Addressing a virtual meeting of the United Kingdom Awami League, Hasina claimed that despite all the demands of the protesters being met, unrest continued across the country, suggesting that it was a well-planned conspiracy.
