Australia has increased the student visa fee from 710 Australian dollars (Rs 38,400) to 1,600 dollars (Rs 88 thousand). Students have to pay this money from July 1, 2024 itself. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh gave this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The fees have been increased double than before.
The increase in student visa fees may make studying in Australia difficult for many students. Already, visa rules for students have been tightened in many countries of the world. The impact of the fee increase is going to be visible on Indian students, who go in large numbers to study in Australian universities. The Minister of State for External Affairs said that the issue of increasing student visa fees has been raised with the Australian authorities. Other concerns affecting Indian students in Australia are also discussed.

What will be the effect on students due to increase in fees?

The Australian government’s move to increase student visa fees is no less than a big blow for Indian students. Indians have long considered Australia as the top destination for higher education. The 126% increase in visa fees is going to increase the financial burden on students planning to study abroad. Especially its impact is clearly visible on middle class students. Students already have to spend lakhs of rupees on tuition fees, accommodation and other expenses.

Due to the increase of 890 Australian dollars in student visa fees, the cost of studying here is also going to increase. Because of this, many students may now reconsider studying in Australia. Student visa fees have increased at a time when the cost of living is continuously increasing across the world. Because of this it is very difficult to study abroad. After the new decision, now Indian students will have to increase their budget before studying in Australia. The impact will be more visible on students studying by taking loans.
