Types of Liver Cancer

Many types of cancer can occur in the liver. The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which begins in a liver cell (hepatocyte). There are also other types of liver cancer, including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma, which are much less common.

Why does liver cancer occur?

Liver cancer occurs when changes develop in the DNA of liver cells. During this time the cells do not remain under control and start growing in an uncontrolled manner and eventually form a tumor which is a group of cancer cells. Sometimes the cause of liver cancer is known, such as chronic hepatitis infection. However, liver cancer also affects people who do not have any congenital or hidden disease. It is not clear what is the cause of which disease. According to health experts, long-term inflammation in the bile ducts can increase the risk of developing HIC. This chronic inflammation can cause changes in DNA, which turn healthy cells into abnormal cells.
