On Saturday (April 15), two brothers, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf, were shot dead in Prayagraj. According to reports, they were being taken to the hospital for a medical examination when three assailants, posing as media personnel, fired bullets at them. The police suspect that a gang buying weapons from Pakistan may have been involved. The investigation so far has found that all three accused who killed Atiq and Ashraf are from outside Prayagraj. Lavlesh Tiwari is from Banda, Arun Maurya is from Hamirpur, and Sunny is from Kasganj district. All three have given the same address, which the police are verifying.
The murder of Atiq and Ashraf has raised questions about law and order in Uttar Pradesh. Atiq had previously raised questions about the intentions of the UP police regarding his safety. Following the attack, the Yogi government suspended 17 policemen who were posted under the security of the two brothers. Section 144 was implemented across the state, and Chief Minister Yogi held a meeting with senior officials until 2:30 in the morning. The CM has appealed to the public to maintain peace.
