In fact, many Indians live in America without legal documents and Trump takes a strict stance towards illegal immigrants. India will have to think about what can be done to maintain good relations with America. With Trump becoming President again, relations between India and America can improve. Economically, strategically and politically, the interests of both the countries are interconnected. However, Trump’s professional behavior can pose a challenge to India. Trump prioritizes his/her interests in trade and will expect India to give something to get something.

Trump’s anti-immigration stance is causing tension

Trump’s anti-immigration stance is a matter of concern for India. his/her policy of expelling illegal immigrants from the country may affect millions of Indians. According to Pew Research report, more than 7,25,000 Indians live without papers in America. Additionally, more than 10 lakh Indians are waiting for a green card. The Trump administration may tighten the rules of citizenship due to which Indians may have to face difficulties.

What should India do?

India should reach an agreement with the Trump administration. Under this agreement, India can guarantee its citizens to get temporary working visas in America and can also ensure that they will not try to become permanent residents in America. India may also agree to accept back Indians living in the US illegally.

India will have to be active

India cannot close its eyes to this problem. The increasing number of illegal Indian immigrants in western countries is an embarrassment for India. Especially when India’s economy is getting stronger. There is a need to change the mindset of young Indians who dream of settling in western countries.

Government can consider these suggestions

• The Indian government should keep an eye on those Indians who go abroad on tourist visa and do not return.
• There is a need to improve the quality of higher education in India so that the youth do not have to go abroad.
• Government officials should stop their children from studying abroad.
• Young Indians need to be made to understand that studying and working abroad is not always beneficial.

It is necessary to increase employment opportunities in India itself

India should bring back its citizens and provide them employment opportunities in the country itself. By 2030, India can be made one of the most attractive countries in the world in terms of education and employment. But for this it is important that we do not ignore the problem of illegal migration.
