New Delhi: Justice DY Chandrachud worked as a Supreme Court judge for more than 8 years and during this period, he/she was the Chief Justice for the last two years. he/she became the Chief Justice of India on 9 November 2022 and is retiring today after two years. As Chief Justice, he/she gave many important decisions, and also took many administrative decisions, from live streaming of court proceedings to removing the blindfold from the goddess of justice, which would prove to be very important. Chief Justice Chandrachud’s legacy will also be remembered especially for those technological reforms. Apart from this, during his/her tenure of eight years as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Chandrachud gave decisions in many important cases, including Ram Temple, Article 370, decriminalization of adultery, decriminalization of homosexual relations in case of consent. etc. decisions are included.Goddess of Justice’s blindfold removed
This step was taken on the initiative of CJI DY Chandrachud. For decades, there was a statue of the Goddess of Justice in the library of the Supreme Court judges, who had a sword in her left hand and a blindfold, but now a new statue has been installed, in which the Goddess of Justice is not blindfolded and has scales in her right hand. And the constitution is in the left hand. Senior Supreme Court Advocate ML Lahauti says that the message behind this new change is being given that the law can see everything equally and the purpose behind keeping the Constitution in place of the sword in the hand is that justice in the country will be governed by the Constitution. It happens accordingly.

Ban on stereotypical words for women

CJI Chandrachud releases handbook to deal with use of gender stereotyped words in court judgements. On August 16, 2023, the Chief Justice had said that gender stereotyped words have been being used in court proceedings, and a handbook was issued to identify them, remove them and create awareness about the use of alternative words. Is. The handbook released by Chief Justice Chandrachud said that there is a wrong stereotype that women are subordinate to men. The Constitution of India guarantees equal rights to people of all genders, then why do women need to live under men? Why this conservative thinking that only women should do all the household work?

Chandrachud’s legacy will be particularly remembered for the technological reforms he/she promoted, including institutionalizing virtual hearings, live streaming, and the ambitious e-Courts project to modernize the judiciary. Major initiatives of his/her tenure include the ESCR project (digitization of Supreme Court reports), DigiSCR (free online searchable database of Supreme Court judgments), use of AI to translate Constitution bench hearings and judgments into regional languages, neutral Implementation of the Citation System, and integration of Supreme Court statistics into the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG).

Father was also Chief Justice
Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India, had a tenure of two years. Justice Chandrachud’s father Justice YV Chandrachud had the longest tenure and he/she was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 7 years. Justice Chandrachud was born on 11 November 1959. his/her father YV Chandrachud was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. he/she remained the Chief Justice of the country for the longest period. his/her mother Prabha was a classical musician. DY Chandrachud passed school from St. Columbus and then graduated in Economics and Math from St. Stephen’s, Delhi. Then he/she did law from CLC DU.

After this, he/she did LLM from Harvard in 1983. After this he/she practiced law and became a senior advocate in 1998. After this he/she was made Additional Solicitor General. Became the Justice of Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000 and remained a Justice till 30 October 2013. After this, he/she was made the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on 31 October 2013 and he/she remained on this post till 12 May 2016, after which he/she was relieved on 13 May 2016. Was made a Supreme Court Justice. Chandrachud became the Chief Justice of India on 9 November 2022 and is retiring on 10 November 2024.

The scope of technical improvement increased significantly
Chief Justice Chandrachud not only initiated these reforms but also inspired and guided the judges of the High Court and District Judiciary for their effective implementation. he/she took strict steps against closure of hybrid hearings by High Courts and issued judicial directions that all courts should make these facilities available to all litigants. At the end of the term, live streaming was extended beyond Constitution Bench hearings to regular hearings of all benches. This decision will prove to be a milestone.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna will take oath on November 11

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11. On October 17, the current Chief Justice Chandrachud had sent a recommendation to the Central Government to appoint the name of the top court’s most senior Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next Chief Justice and on October 24, the President issued the order of his/her appointment. Justice Khanna is the 51st Justice of India. Will become Chief Justice. Justice Khanna will have a tenure of a little more than six months as Chief Justice and will retire on May 13, 2025. Justice Khanna was appointed as Justice of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019. In 2005, Justice Khanna was made the Justice of Delhi High Court. he/she was born on 14 May 1960. his/her education was done in Delhi. he/she studied law from CLC (Campus Law Centre), Delhi University. After this he/she started practicing.
