Army Day History: Why is Army Day celebrated on 15 January? What is the history of this day?

In the year 1949, General K. M. Cariappa assumed his/her post as the first Army Chief of India. This was a historic moment. For the first time, the command of the Indian Army came into the hands of an Indian. This was a turning point in the military history of India, after the British Raj. General Cariappa took command of the Indian Army on 15 January, hence, this day is celebrated as Indian Army Day every year.

On Army Day, a grand parade is also organized at Cariappa Parade Ground, Delhi. In this the army displays its modern weapons and equipment. Military exercises, cultural programs and gallantry awards are also given.

The Indian Army is one of the most powerful armies in the world. It guards our borders and also participates in international peacekeeping operations. The army is always ready to serve the country, which shows its loyalty and dedication.
