GBS is a rare condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness, or paralysis. In this, a bacteria called Campylobacter jejuni usually causes stomach infection.

Weakness and tingling in hands and feet are usually the initial symptoms. These symptoms can spread rapidly and lead to paralysis. In its most severe form, Guillain-Barré syndrome can become a medical emergency.

How does Campylobacter jejuni multiply and infect humans?

Campylobacter jejuni infection occurs through consumption of contaminated food or water. Raw or undercooked chicken, unpasteurized milk and dirty water are its main sources. Using the same cutting board or utensils when cooking can spread bacteria through cross-contamination. Bad habits such as not washing hands after touching raw meat or coming in contact with infected animals also increase the risk. Its outbreak is more prevalent in places where cleanliness is not taken care of or food safety methods are not adopted properly. After entering the body, the bacteria infect the intestinal lining. This causes symptoms like diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever and nausea.
