Are Indian soldiers deployed in Lebanon under UN mission safe? Know where their posting is

New Delhi: In the ongoing war between Israel and Lebanon, UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) posts are also coming under target. Under UNIFIL, more than 10 thousand soldiers of the armies of 50 countries of the world including India are deployed. India also has about 900 soldiers in it. In which area are the Indian soldiers under UNIFIL in Lebanon and are they safe? When Israel started the ground attack on Lebanon, UNIFIL was asked to retreat from there but UNIFIL refused and remained there. According to sources, Israel had also personally told all the countries (whose troops are in UNIFIL) that they were launching a ground attack and the peacekeepers should withdraw from there. However, there are soldiers from all the countries under the UN mission, hence no one retreated. The area between Israel and Lebanon is known as the Blue Line. Its total length is 120 kilometers. There is a buffer zone between the Blue Line and the Litani River where the UN force is deployed, which is a peacekeeping force.

Ground attack did not take place in the area of Indian battalion

When Israel started the ground attack on Lebanon, it was away from the area where the Indian battalion is deployed. Then Israel started attacking from Nakaura and its surrounding areas. UNIFIL has its headquarters in Nakaura. The Indian battalion is deployed at the trijunction of Israel-Lebanon-Syria. It is believed that Israeli forces will come here last because this area is risky for Israeli soldiers.

Here it is easy for Hezbollah to conduct an ambush. At present, Israel has not started its ground attack in the area where the Indian battalion is. But according to sources, two days ago, movement of Israeli tanks was seen in Israeli territory just in front of the area where the Indian battalion is deployed. Israeli soldiers also targeted a village.

Can India evacuate them safely if needed?

Can Indian soldiers be safely evacuated from there if the situation worsens? According to a senior official, this decision has to be taken by the UN. Soldiers from other countries including India are there under the umbrella of UN. Therefore, no country can decide this at its own level. If a decision is taken to remove the UN mission from there, then a contingency plan is being discussed for how the Indian soldiers will be safely evacuated from there.

The Indian battalion which is deployed as peacekeepers in Lebanon consists of about 50 officers and remaining soldiers. It houses a battalion of the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army. Along with the infantry, armoured, engineers, signals, medical and air defense soldiers are also deployed.
