Amritpal Singh and Engineer Rashid took oath as MPs, both the leaders are lodged in different jails


New Delhi: Amritpal Singh, lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam and Engineer Rashid, lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi, reached Parliament House on Friday and took oath as MPs. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla administered the oath of membership of Parliament to both the newly elected MPs in his/her chamber. Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh came out on parole to take the oath of MP. he/she has won the Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat of Punjab. However, when the Lok Sabha session was going on, he/she was in jail. That is why he/she was sworn in now.

Engineer Rashid, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi, has won the election from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat of Jammu and Kashmir. During the first session of the recently concluded 18th Lok Sabha, 539 out of 542 newly elected MPs took oath as members of Parliament. But, Amritpal Singh and Engineer Rashid could not take oath during the session due to being in jail. A new MP has to take oath within 60 days or else his/her membership can be lost.

Jailed Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh and Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who is facing charges of terror financing, were sworn in as Lok Sabha members on Friday. Rashid, elected MP from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail in a terror financing case. he/she is also known as Engineer Rashid. Amritpal, head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation and a Khalistan supporter, won from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the recent parliamentary elections.

Officials in Amritsar said Amritpal, currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail along with nine associates under the National Security Act, has been granted four-day parole to take oath as Lok Sabha member. Rashid was granted two hours of custody parole for taking oath, which does not include travel time from Tihar to Parliament. Amritpal Singh has been granted four-day custody parole, which will begin from July 5. Amritpal Singh will be brought from Assam to Delhi and then taken back. During the parole period, he/she cannot speak to the media on any issue, address the media or make any statement.
