Amid growing tension with China, Taiwan has received the world’s most advanced tanks from America.

Taiwan has received 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks from the United States, the first American tank delivery to the island in 23 years, Radio Free Asia reports.

According to Radio Free Asia, the shipment is part of a larger order of 122 tanks expected over the next two years. While the M1A2T is considered one of the most advanced main battle tanks globally, some experts have raised concerns about its suitability for Taiwan’s mountainous terrain and dense urban areas. However, the tanks are seen as a major boost to Taiwan’s defense capabilities, especially given the ongoing tensions with China.

The M1A2T Abrams is an improved version of the M1 Abrams manufactured by General Dynamics, armed with a 120 mm smoothbore gun capable of penetrating armor up to 850 mm thick. Its formidable firepower, advanced armor and speed make it a powerful asset for Taiwan’s military.

Compared to Taiwan’s current fleet of M60A3 and CM11 tanks – both of which are more than 30 years old – the M1A2T represents a significant technological leap. In addition, the Abrams has a “hunter-killer” capability, allowing it to track and engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Eric Gomez, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, emphasized that the M1A2T’s primary role in defending Taiwan would be to protect critical landing points during a potential Chinese invasion. While China’s amphibious forces may deploy light armored vehicles, Gomez pointed out that these will not be supported by main battle tanks, positioning the M1A2T as a major deterrent.

Despite concerns about the tank’s performance in Taiwan’s challenging terrain, experts agree that the M1A2T significantly enhances Taiwan’s ability to withstand Chinese military pressure. The arrival of the tanks comes amid rising tensions with China, which has repeatedly opposed US-Taiwan military cooperation and asserted its territorial claim to the island.

Meanwhile, when asked about the deal, China’s Foreign Ministry said, “Attempts by Taiwan authorities to achieve independence through military dependence on external forces are doomed to failure.” And will firmly protect territorial integrity.
