American students have ‘dabba goal’ in maths, questions are being raised on US education system

American Student Survey: There is a decline in the maths and science scores of children in America. America has always been ahead in the field of science and technology and because of this the falling numbers have created concern. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has released a report based on ‘Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study’ (TIMSS) in December 2024. According to this, American students are far behind in science and maths compared to other countries of the world.
After the current report, the American education system has also been put in the dock. TIMSS data shows that between 2019 and 2023, math scores of American fourth grade students have declined by 18 points. There has been a decline of 27 points in the scores of class eight students, which is the biggest decline since 1995. Current data shows that the progress that has been made over the past several years is now waning. The performance of American students is about the same as it was 30 years ago.

What are the reasons for decreasing numbers in Maths-Science?

Children’s education has been affected due to the Covid pandemic. But analysts say it is not right to blame the pandemic entirely. TIMSS data shows that there are long-standing flaws in the education system, which have been exacerbated by school closures and online learning.

Differentiation of Curriculum: Maths curriculum is different in different states of America. In some states, curriculums have been made based on research, which are quite difficult. On the contrary, in some states the course is very easy. Because of this, disparity is seen in the performance of students.

Shortage of teachers: There is a shortage of good math teachers in America, especially in rural and poor areas. Because of this, students are facing difficulties in studies. Often schools have to hire less experienced or temporary teachers, which makes it difficult for students to understand basic concepts.

Inequality in Technology: Digital learning tools are effective in teaching math skills, but they are not being used equally everywhere. Students in poor areas are away from digital devices, due to which the gap between poor and rich students is increasing.

Role of parents: Parental involvement also plays an important role in children’s education. Online learning during the pandemic further increased the burden on parents, especially those in families who have multiple responsibilities.
