American NSA Jake Sullivan coming to Delhi before Trump’s oath, why is this visit important?


New Delhi : Before the swearing in of new US President Donald Trump, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is coming to Delhi on a two-day visit. he/she will be in India on 5th and 6th January. American NSA Sullivan’s visit before Trump’s swearing in is considered very important. During this, he/she will meet India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. Jake Sullivan will discuss China’s dam projects and other issues with India. During this, issues like nuclear cooperation, artificial intelligence, space etc. will also be discussed.

Sullivan’s visit to India amid China’s increasing influence

The US considers India an important ally against China’s growing influence in Asia. This visit of Jake Sullivan is important for India-US relations. The issue of China’s dams, especially in the Mekong region, is a matter of concern for both countries. A senior US official said that we have seen in many places in the Indo-Pacific that upstream dams built by China, right in the Mekong region, can actually harm the environment. Along with this, it can also have climate impact on downstream countries. America understands India’s concerns and is ready to discuss it.

Chances of discussion on China’s dam project

India is concerned about China’s dam project on the Yarlung Jangbo river in Tibet. This river flows in India. India has presented its views to China regarding this project. This dam will be the largest dam in the world, with the capacity to produce 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The project was approved last month.

New avenues of cooperation will be explored in the field of artificial intelligence and space. There will also be discussions on military licensing and China’s economic policies. Another American official said that there will be no meeting with the Dalai Lama during this period. This visit is important for both the countries and is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations.
