Amazing feat of driver’s son, challenged a legendary all-rounder, once narrowly escaped death in firing

New Delhi. After Bangladesh’s spectacular series win against Pakistan on their home ground, the name of all-rounder Mehdi Hasan Miraz is in the news everywhere. This 26-year-old player has achieved the status of a star with his/her performance. At a time when the career of veteran Shakib-al-Hasan is in its last phase, Mehdi has emerged as a big hope for Bangladesh fans as an all-rounder.

In this series, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana also performed well for Bangladesh but among all these names, Mehdi stole the show. In the series, he/she proved to be a ‘trump card’ for captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto in both batting and bowling and was awarded Player of the Series in the team’s historic ‘clean sweep’.

In this two-Test series, Mehdi scored 155 runs at an average of 77.50 and took 10 wickets at an average of 18.60. In the second Test, after Bangladesh lost 6 wickets for 26 runs in the first innings in reply to Pakistan’s 274 runs, the kind of temperament he/she showed in batting with Liton Das has raised his/her stature a lot. Liton Das, who scored 138 runs, along with Miraz (78 runs) made a partnership of 165 runs for the 7th wicket and broke the spirits of the Shan Masood brigade that was seen on the ‘front foot’. With the help of this performance, Mehdi has reached the 7th position in the Test all-rounder rankings.

Mehdi should not become the X factor in the series against India!
In view of this performance/form against Pakistan, Mehdi is being considered as the X factor for Bangladesh for the two Test series against India starting on 19th September. Captain Shanto also in his/her excitement of victory claimed to repeat the result like Pakistan against Rohit Sharma brigade, although doing so is like climbing Everest. India is currently the number 2 Test team in the world and has not lost a series on home ground since 2012. Anyway, Mehdi’s performance against India in Tests has been ordinary.

So far in 5 Tests against Team India, he/she has scored 188 runs (average 18.80) and taken 14 wickets at an average of 45.71, but despite this he/she can make a difference. By the way, Team India will remember the bitter defeat of one wicket at the hands of Mehdi in the 2022 ODI, in which Bangladesh had lost 9 wickets for 136 runs at one time while chasing India’s score of 186, but Mehdi (38*) turned the defeat into a win by adding 51 runs for the last wicket with Mustafizur Rahman (10*). he/she was the best player of this match (1/43 and 38*). Bangladesh team has to play three T20 matches apart from two Tests in India tour.

The journey to fulfill his/her cricketing dreams has not been easy for Mehdi, who grew up in poverty. Born on 25 October 1997, Mehdi’s father was a driver in a ‘Rent a Car’ firm. The entire family lived in a small two-room house in Khulna. Sometimes his/her father had work and sometimes not. Even in such a situation, he/she left no stone unturned to fulfill his/her son’s cricketing dream. Mehdi, who started playing cricket at the age of 8, started gaining fame at an early age after joining the Kashipur Cricket Academy. The brilliant performance of right-handed batsman and off-break bowler Mehdi did not go in vain and he/she was made the captain of Bangladesh for the 2015-16 Under-19 World Cup. The team made it to the semi-finals in the tournament and Mehdi became the Player of the Tournament. Performing brilliantly in both batting and bowling (242 runs and 12 wickets), he/she staked a claim for a place in the senior team.

In his/her second Test of the series in Mirpur, he/she took 12 wickets for 159 runs and became the 5th youngest bowler (19 years, three days) in the world to take 10 or more wickets. Appreciating this match-winning performance, the then PM Sheikh Hasina announced to give free land to Mirage to build a house in Khulna.

he/she narrowly escaped an attack in New Zealand
During the Bangladesh team’s tour of New Zealand in March 2019, many players of the Bangladesh team including Mehdi had a narrow escape when a lunatic named Brenton Tarrant opened fire at the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch. Miraz and other players were going to this mosque to offer prayers at that time and were just 50 meters away. Bangladeshi cricketers described this attack as the most terrifying experience of their lives. Just a few days after escaping this attack, Mehdi married his/her fiancée Rabia Akhtar and started a new life.

When he/she was removed from captaincy just before the toss in BPL
In the 2022 season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Mehdi Hasan Miraz’s name came into controversy when he/she was removed from the captaincy just before the toss of the Chittagong Challengers match and Naeem Islam was made the captain. Miraz, who led Chittagong to victory in 4 matches of the tournament, was very angry with this decision. According to the franchise, this decision was taken on the advice of the team’s head coach Paul Nixon. However, Mehdi had accused the franchise’s COO Yasir Alam of lying, calling this claim false.
