New Delhi : Ajit Doval has once again been appointed as the National Security Advisor. Doval has been given this responsibility for the third consecutive time. Since the swearing-in of the Modi government, there were speculations whether Doval would get this important responsibility again or someone else would come to this post. However, Modi has once again expressed confidence in his/her old trump card. After coming to power in 2014, PM Modi appointed Doval as the National Security Advisor for the first time. In 2019, he/she was once again appointed to this post for five years.

Why did PM Modi express confidence?

Doval has performed many important tasks during the tenure of the Modi government in the last decade. In 2014, Ajit Doval ensured the release of 46 Indian nurses trapped in a hospital in Tikrit, Iraq. he/she went on a top-secret mission and went to Iraq on June 25, 2014, to understand the ground situation. The nurses were brought back to India on July 5, 2014. The September 2016 surgical strike by India and the Balakot airstrike across the border in Pakistan in February 2019 were carried out under Doval’s supervision. he/she also helped end the Doklam standoff. Apart from this, decisive steps were taken to deal with insurgency in the Northeast. Born in Uttarakhand in 1945, he/she was the youngest police officer in India to be awarded the Kirti Chakra. It is a gallantry award for military personnel.

What is a National Security Advisor?

The National Security Advisor is a senior official of the National Security Council (NSC) of India. he/she serves as the chief advisor to the Prime Minister of India on national security policy and strategic matters. They work at the discretion of the Prime Minister of India. The National Security Advisor (NSA) is tasked with regularly advising the Prime Minister on all matters related to India’s internal and external threats and opportunities. The NSA’s work portfolio includes overseeing strategic and sensitive issues on behalf of the Prime Minister. The National Security Advisor of India also serves as the Prime Minister’s special interlocutor with China and envoy to Pakistan and Israel on security matters. The Government of India gave cabinet rank to NSA Ajit Doval along with making him/her NSA in 2019.

This post was established in India in 1998. Since then all the NSAs appointed belong to the Indian Foreign Service or the Indian Police Service. Brajesh Mishra was the first National Security Advisor during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. he/she remained in this post till 22 May 2004. After this, during the tenure of Manmohan Singh government, this responsibility was given to IFS officer JN Dixit. After this, IPS MK Narayanan held this post from 3 January 2005 to 23 January 2010. After him/her, IFS Shivshankar Menon was the National Security Advisor from 24 January 2010 to 28 May 2014. After Modi became the Prime Minister in the year 2014, Ajit Doval was appointed to this post.
