New Delhi: After the meeting of the heads of state of the Quad countries, the navies of the Quad countries will now conduct joint military exercises. In the Quad meeting, concerns were raised about China’s attitude and there was talk of jointly countering China’s bullying. The heads of state of the Quad countries also talked about China’s attitude in the South China Sea and free navigation in the Indo-Pacific.‘Malabar Exercise’ will be held in the Bay of Bengal
India, America, Japan and Australia are together to curb China’s attempts to bully in the sea and to stop the misuse of freedom of navigation and this is the Quad. The navies of these four countries will conduct the ‘Malabar Exercise’ in the Bay of Bengal this year. This is a major military exercise. This exercise will take place in the Bay of Bengal near Visakhapatnam from 8 October to 18 October. This is the same area from where 80 percent of China’s energy trade passes through, passing a little below the Andaman Nicobar.

The exercise will be conducted in two phases
This exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be the harbour phase, where the strategy and challenges of the exercise will be discussed and the second phase will be the sea phase in which the exercise will be conducted as per the strategy by creating a real war scenario. There will be many high intensity exercises in the sea phase. It will include anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine exercises. That is, how to destroy the enemy’s surface target and similarly, along with the practice of targeting the enemy’s target in the air, how to destroy the enemy’s submarine, the navies of all the four countries will practice together. All the assets of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Command will be involved in this exercise.

Warships from India, Australia, America and Japan will take part in this. India, America, Japan and Australia have common interests in the Indo-Pacific. These four countries have been advocating a free and open Indo-Pacific, while China is trying to increase its influence in the Indo-Pacific and is sometimes showing an aggressive attitude. Last year this exercise was hosted by the Australian Navy.

A big message for China
In the Malabar exercise, the navies of India, Australia, Japan and America will also see how to land on each other’s ships together. By working together as a team, they will see how these four navies can carry out an operation together if needed. This is a big message for China. If there is a need to increase pressure on China, then these four navies can do this work together. There are also many logistics agreements between the four countries. They can go to each other’s ports and each other’s warships can take necessary things from the other’s port. The Malabar exercise started in 1992, when it was a bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the US Navy. Then Japan also joined it and in 2020 Australia also became a part of the Malabar exercise.
