After America and France, now Britain has also joined, so is India’s permanent membership in UNSC confirmed?

New Delhi: India has been demanding permanent membership in UNSC for a long time. However, due to China’s obstruction, this demand could not be fulfilled. However, now once again India’s support is increasing. After America and France, now British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). he/she said this while addressing the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. Earlier, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron had also advocated the inclusion of India in the UNSC.

The British Prime Minister said in his/her address that the Security Council will have to be changed to become a more representative body. This should be a body that is ready to take action, and not one that is paralyzed by politics. he/she said that we should give permanent representation to Africa in UNSC. Along with this, India, Japan, Brazil and Germany should also be made permanent members. Along with this, more seats should be increased for elected members.

A day before this, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron had also supported the inclusion of India as a permanent member in the UNSC. The United Nations Security Council currently has five permanent members and ten non-permanent members. Non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for a two-year term. The five permanent members are Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France and the United States. he/she has the power to veto any proposal.

Earlier on Wednesday, during his/her address to the United Nations General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron had advocated the inclusion of India as a permanent member in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). he/she also supported the membership of Brazil, Japan, Germany and two African countries. Emphasized the need to make the UNSC more inclusive and representative. Macron said let’s make the UN more efficient.

Macron said that we need to make the UNSC more representative. This is why France is in favor of the expansion of the Security Council. Germany, Japan, India and Brazil should be permanent members along with two countries that Africa will decide to represent them.

Last week, US President Joe Biden supported India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. During the Quad Leaders Summit, the leaders of the Quad (US, India, Japan and Australia) in a joint statement stressed the need for comprehensive reforms in the UN body. This happened after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware on September 21. After which, in a statement issued by the White House, it was said that Biden confirmed America’s support for India’s inclusion in the Security Council.

India has long been demanding urgent and much-needed reforms in the UN Security Council. India believes that it should get permanent membership on this important forum of the United Nations. India argues that the 15-member council, established in 1945, is archaic and fails to represent the current geopolitical landscape of the 21st century.

The United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members: five permanent members with veto power, the United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom. 10 non-permanent members who are elected for a two-year term. The primary functions of the Security Council include investigating conflicts, establishing peacekeeping operations, and imposing sanctions when necessary. It plays an important role in dealing with global crises and conflicts, making it an essential institution in international diplomacy.
