After a long time, the cinema halls have returned to life, experts said- the film should be strong, the ticket prices should also be low

Last Friday, Cinema Lovers Day was celebrated on more than 4000 multiplex screens across the country and tickets were sold for just 99 rupees. Due to this, the cinema halls which were lying empty for a long time were seen bustling with activity. Experts say that along with the content of the films being good, the price of tickets should also be low. Here is a report:

Highlights

  • After a long time, the cinema halls are back in business, experts said- the film should be strong, the ticket prices should also be low
  • Similarly, the record for the third biggest advance booking of this year is also in the name of the film ‘Article 370’ released on Cinema Day in February.
  • Along with the reduction in the price of cinema tickets, it is important that the content of the films is also good

The last Friday of May saw a return to life after a long time at the box office which was lying dormant for the past two months. If experts are to be believed, a large number of viewers visited the cinemas on this day as they got the opportunity to watch a movie in multiplexes for just 99 rupees on the occasion of Cinema Lovers Day. Otherwise, for a long time, cinema owners were not only reducing their shows, but some cinemas were even showing old movies. It is believed that despite selling tickets for just 99 rupees, the collection of all the movies shown in cinemas last Friday crossed the double digit mark, which is being considered a good sign for the box office. Last Friday, after a long time, all the movies together earned more than 10 crores at the box office. The magic of getting tickets at cheap rates worked on the viewers can be gauged from the fact that Rajkumar Rao and Jahnavi Kapoor’s movie ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’ beat this year’s highest grossing movie ‘Fighter’ in terms of advance booking. While 2.15 lakh advance tickets of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’ were sold at multiplex chains, 1.45 lakh advance tickets of ‘Fighter’ were sold. Similarly, the record of the third biggest advance booking of this year is also in the name of the film ‘Article 370’ which was released on Cinema Day in February. 1.25 lakh advance tickets of this film were sold.

‘People spend money wisely’

Along with the reduction in the price of cinema tickets, it is also important that the content of the films is also good. For example, all the three films released this week, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’, ‘Saavi’ and ‘Chhota Bheem’ have received decent reviews. This is the reason why the audience is coming to watch all three films. However, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh believes that in a country like India, people spend money very thoughtfully. Therefore, cinema owners should keep the prices of food items low along with tickets. he/she wrote on social media, ‘Keep the price of tickets low and also control the price of food items. Actually, India is such a market where a lot of thought has to be given to the price of things. Here people spend money very thoughtfully. Cinema Lovers Day is a great example of this, where the price of tickets has come down and on the other hand, the box office which was cold for a long time has come back to life. Audiences have returned to the cinemas overnight. The only way to increase the sale of tickets is to reduce their prices. Also, to increase the number of viewers, the exhibition sector will have to control the price of food. It is obvious that in order to attract people to the cinema, along with the movies being good, the prices of tickets and food should also be within budget.

‘Tickets of medium budget films should be cheaper’

Regarding the return of the charm to cinema halls after a long time, producer and film business analyst Girish Johar says, ‘After a long time, the box office was bustling last Friday. I think there are three things behind this. Firstly, the biggest reason for the audience returning to the cinema is the low price of cinema tickets. The second reason is that the elections and IPL are also over. The third reason for the audience returning to the cinema is the content of the film. If the price of cinema tickets is low and the film is not strong, then also the audience does not come to the cinema. You will remember that before this, when Cinema Day was celebrated in February, two films Article 370 and Crack were released. The content of Article 370 was good, so the film earned more than 80 crores. But due to weak content, Crack could barely cross the double digit mark. I believe that cinema people need to keep the ticket prices under control in the future as well. Especially the ticket prices of medium budget films with good content should not be very high. Otherwise, the audience waits for the release of those films on OTT instead of going to the cinema to watch them. They should wait for mega budget films of big stars to increase the price of tickets.
