Afghanistan: People in Herat appeal for security after deadly attack on mosque

People in Afghanistan’s Herat province have sought safety after a deadly mosque attack on Tuesday killed at least five people, including a woman and a child, according to TOLOnews.

According to security officials, the identity of the attackers is not yet clear.

The gunman attacked the mosque in Mohammadiya in the Gujra district of western Herat during evening prayers.

Herat resident Mohammad Zaman called for securing places of worship and said, “It is the demand of the nation that the government should secure all mosques and pay more attention to this matter.”

Meanwhile, another resident, Asadullah Qeemet, said: “Security should be taken so that people do not face any more trouble; This is my request to the government,” according to TOLOnews.

The attack came five months after gunmen attacked residents, including two Shia clerics, in the Jabriyal neighborhood west of Herat city. Six people died in that attack, two of whom were women.

Residents of Herat have demanded the identification and conviction of the perpetrators of attacks on people in their province.

However, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident is under investigation.
