Admission in 46 central universities including DU will be based on 12th board marks, understand the new rule of UGC

Students can also get admission in the 46 central universities of the country on the basis of board exam (12th) scores. The primary or main criteria for admission in central universities will be the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) score. But on this basis, if seats remain vacant in any central university after three or four rounds of counseling, then some concessions will be applicable to fill them. UGC has issued Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to fill the vacant seats. Universities have been instructed that not even a single seat should remain vacant.

It is stated in the SOP that-

  • CUET If seats are still vacant after the merit, the university can give relaxation in subject criteria in CUET.
  • Even after that, if seats remain vacant then the university can also conduct its own entrance test.
  • Or you can give admission on the basis of qualifying exam marks. In graduation courses including BA, BCom, BSc, the qualifying exam will be 12th i.e. board marks. Whereas admission in PG courses can be done on the basis of marks obtained in graduation.
  • UGC has said that reservation roster will be applicable in all courses and programs. The university will have to bear the responsibility of completing the course of those students whose admission is delayed.

Why was there a need?

UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadeesh Kumar while talking to NBT said that SOP has been prepared to ensure that not even a single seat remains vacant in central universities. Based on the options given to the universities to fill the vacant seats, the admission process will be completely merit-based and transparent.

Students who appeared in CUET but may or may not have applied earlier to any university for the courses can also be considered. UGC is trying to ensure that the resources of the university are not wasted because every seat is important. The UGC chairman says that the university will have to try to fill every seat of every course by adopting the guidelines given in the SOP.

NBT Lens: Will students who have already taken admission not get a chance?

Only those students will be able to apply for admission to the vacant seats of UGC who have not got admission anywhere even after the third or fourth round of counseling. The applications of students who have got admission in any course in any central university will not be considered. UGC says that the purpose of whatever concessions have been given is to fill the vacant seats and if the students who have already got admission will also get a chance, then this exercise will have no meaning.

This effort of UGC is good but UGC will also have to monitor the admission process of the university regarding vacant seats so that there are no complaints.
