Adani, Sambhal, Manipur… Opposition members create ruckus in Parliament, Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha proceedings adjourned till Monday

New Delhi: On the fourth day of the winter session of Parliament, there was a strong uproar from the opposition parties in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Opposition members continued their protest on other issues including the Adani bribery case and Sambhal violence. Seeing the increasing uproar, the proceedings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till Monday. The opposition remained adamant on demanding discussion on these issues. Soon after the listed papers were tabled in the morning session, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said he/she had received 17 notices for adjournment of the agenda under Rule 267 of the House. Opposition MPs had given notices to discuss allegations of corruption and embezzlement against the Adani Group, communal violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal and caste conflict in Manipur. The Chairman said that he/she is rejecting all the notices. Due to this many opposition MPs protested and started sloganeering.

Uproar in Rajya Sabha

Expressing his/her displeasure, Dhankhar said, ‘I appeal to you (MPs) to think deeply. Rule 267 is being used as a weapon of disruption. Opposition MPs including Congress protested against this comment. Amid continuous sloganeering by opposition MPs, Dhankhar said, ‘…this cannot be appreciated. We are setting a very bad example. Our work is not people-centric. We are becoming irrelevant…’ The Rajya Sabha Chairman adjourned the proceedings of the House till December 2.

Sloganeering in Lok Sabha

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha proceedings were initially adjourned till noon and later for the entire day. Opposition members staged strong protests over the Adani dispute and the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. As soon as the House meeting began, members of opposition parties including Congress tried to raise several issues. Some members of Congress and Samajwadi Party were also in the well of the House and were raising slogans. Speaker Om Birla said that the House should be allowed to function and Question Hour is the time of members. he/she said that people want the House to function and discussion to take place. During the question hour, two questions were raised for about 10 minutes each. As the uproar continued, the proceedings were adjourned till afternoon.
