Who is retired Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur? Who was appointed President of IJC by UN

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Madan B. Lokur has been appointed Chairman of the United Nations Internal Justice Council (IJC). his/her tenure will be till 12 November 2028. In a letter to Justice Lokur, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said a retired Supreme Court judge will lead the council, which will also include other eminent jurists.

Who is Justice Lokur?

Justice Lokur is 71 years old. he/she was appointed judge of the Supreme Court on June 4, 2012. he/she served as a Supreme Court judge for more than 6 years. Justice Lokur retired as a Supreme Court judge on 30 December 2018. he/she started his/her law practice in 1977. he/she practiced law in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for many years.

Journey started as a lawyer

Justice Lokur became an advocate-on-record in the Supreme Court in 1981 and was appointed as a senior advocate in 1997. After this, in 1998 he/she was appointed Additional Solicitor General. his/her tenure as a judge began in February 1999, when he/she was appointed Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court. he/she became a permanent judge in July 1999.

Chief Justice of Guwahati and Andhra Pradesh High Court

Justice Lokur was also the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Andhra Pradesh High Court. After this he/she was made a judge in the Supreme Court. Apart from India, in May 2019 he/she was appointed to the non-resident panel of the Supreme Court of Fiji for three years. In 2022, it was extended for another three years. Now the UN has given him/her a place in the IJC.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his/her letter, ‘I am pleased to appoint you as President, Member of the Internal Justice Council, with immediate effect, with a term ending on 12 November 2028.’
