New Delhi: After a prolonged dry spell, the plains of Kashmir received the first snowfall of the season on Thursday. Due to this, the severity of winter has started increasing in North India. Especially in other northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, the cold has intensified. At the same time, normal life has been affected due to rain in many parts of South India. Thursday was the coldest day of December in the last three years in Delhi, when the mercury dropped to 4.5 degrees Celsius. However, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9 degrees on Friday. According to the Meteorological Department, similar weather is expected in North India including Delhi-NCR for the next few days.

Cold winds increased the cold in Delhi

The effect of snowfall in the hilly areas is being seen in the capital Delhi. The mercury is continuously falling and the minimum temperature may reach 4 degrees in the coming days. Thursday was the coldest December day in Delhi in the last three years. In the morning, people were seen using bonfires to protect themselves from the light fog and cold winds.

According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 6 degrees and the maximum temperature was 21 degrees. The Meteorological Department has predicted dense fog as well as severe cold in Delhi-NCR from December 14. Cold wave is also expected in many areas.

Cold wave situation will continue for now

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, cold wave conditions will persist in some parts of North India in the coming weeks. The department has issued an alert for Delhi and surrounding areas. There is a forecast of cold wave in the national capital on Saturday. Due to this the temperature will drop and the cold will increase. The Meteorological Department has also instructed people to remain alert in view of the cold wave in different states including UP, Bihar, Jharkhand.

According to IMD, on December 14, the minimum temperature in Delhi will be 6 degrees and the maximum temperature will be 21 degrees. Fog will also persist during this period. On December 15, the minimum temperature will be recorded at 6 degrees and the maximum temperature will be recorded at 20 degrees. At the same time, on December 18 and 19, the minimum temperature is expected to be 6 degrees and the maximum temperature will be 20 degrees.

Snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar did not witness snowfall, however, plains of Shopian, Pulwama and Baramulla as well as upper reaches of Anantnag, Budgam and Bandipora received light snowfall. Light to moderate snowfall occurred in the upper reaches of the valley including tourist places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Tangmarg, Gurez and Zojila Pass. Officials said the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for traffic due to snow accumulation at Zojila Pass, while the Bandipora-Gurez road and Mughal Road were also closed.

How will the weather be in Himachal?

Snowfall occurred in Lahaul of Himachal Pradesh and Gondla of Spiti. Cold wave continues in upper and tribal areas. Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti was the coldest, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 11.3 degrees Celsius. Una was the hottest day with a maximum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius. Shimla Meteorological Center has predicted dry weather in the state for the next one week.

Severe cold in Rajasthan, mercury 0.1 degree in Sikar

It is extremely cold in Rajasthan. According to the Meteorological Department, severe cold will continue in Rajasthan for the next few days. The lowest night temperature was recorded at 0.1 degree Celsius in Fatehpur town of Sikar district. The mercury dropped to one degree Celsius in Sikar city, while Churu and Karauli recorded a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has predicted severe cold in some areas in the next 24 hours.

Haryana-Punjab faces the brunt of winter

The temperature in Haryana’s Hisar dropped to 1.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while cold continued to prevail in many places in the state and neighboring Punjab. Chandigarh, the joint capital of Haryana and Punjab, also had a cold night and the temperature was recorded at 4.7 degrees Celsius. Only a few places in north-west India, including Patiala, Karnal, Rohtak, Delhi, Sikar, Alwar and Phalodi, have seen minimum temperatures rise by more than two degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department said that the increase in minimum temperature is local and is due to changing wind conditions. There has been no major change in minimum temperatures in most parts of north-west India.

Heavy rain in South India

It rained in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Heavy rain lashed many parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare holiday in schools in Chennai and several other districts. Bengaluru and parts of southern interior and coastal districts of Karnataka received rain on Thursday, causing traffic jams. IMD said that during the next 24 hours, Bengaluru city and surrounding areas are likely to have generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in some areas. Meanwhile, Darjeeling in West Bengal remained the coldest at 3.8 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has predicted a drop in the minimum temperature in the state on Thursday.
