US Student Visa: There is a decline in the number of Indian students going to study in America, because less number of student visas are being issued. To study in the United States, a student visa is required, known as an F-1 visa. After the Corona epidemic, there was a huge increase in the number of Indian students going to America to study, but now it is declining rapidly. The figures of the last two years are quite shocking.
US State Department data shows that F-1 visas granted to Indian students have declined by 38 percent in the first nine months of 2024. This figure is compared to the same period in 2023. According to the monthly report of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Indian students received 64,008 F-1 visas between January and September 2024. In the same period last year, 1,03,495 visas were granted. In 2022, the number was 93,181, while in 2021, 65,235 visas were issued.

Chinese students also got less visas

However, the thing to be noted here is that the decline in getting student visas is not limited to Indian students only, but Chinese students have also become victims of this. Chinese students are the second largest group studying in the United States. F-1 visas issued to Chinese students have seen an 8 percent decline. Between January and September this year, 73,781 visas were issued to Chinese students, while 80,603 visas were issued in 2023.

Even though visa numbers appear to be declining, the 2024 figure is higher than the 52,034 visas issued to Chinese students in the same period in 2022. F-1 visa is especially for those foreign students who study in American universities. More than 90 percent of all student visas issued each year are F-1 visas. Apart from this, different types of visas are also given to students coming for exchange programs and training.

What could be the reason for the decline in student visas?

There could be many reasons for America issuing less number of visas. Most students are not able to provide proof of financial status required for studies, while some students are not able to prove during the visa interview that they will return to their home country after completing their studies. Not answering the correct questions at the time of visa interview and missing necessary documents in the application are also among the reasons due to which the visa is not issued. However, the real reason for this decline has not been revealed yet.
