Who is Chief Justice Manmohan who can become the next judge of the Supreme Court, recommendation sent to the Central Government

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has unanimously passed a resolution recommending the appointment of Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan as a Supreme Court Justice. The collegium of five senior judges led by Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recommended the name of Justice Manmohan to the Central Government. Justice Manmohan is currently working as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. he/she is the son of famous bureaucrat and political leader Jagmohan.Proposal has been sent to the center
The Supreme Court Collegium has unanimously passed this proposal and sent it to the Centre. Apart from Chief Justice Khanna, the collegium includes Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice AS Oka. The total sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 34, which also includes the Chief Justice. At present, 32 judges including the Chief Justice are working. Recently Justice Hima Kohli and Chief Justice DY Chandrachud have retired, after which two posts have become vacant.

The Supreme Court Collegium has said that the names of the Chief Justice and other senior justices of the High Court were discussed. These names were considered for appointment as Supreme Court justices. Justice Manmohan’s name is second in the seniority list in India, while he/she is the most senior justice in Delhi High Court. Moreover, there is only one judge of the Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court, representing the entire country.

Who is Justice Manmohan?
Justice Manmohan was born on December 17, 1962 in Delhi. he/she received his/her schooling from Modern School, Barakhamba Road. Subsequently, he/she obtained BA (Hons) degree in History from Hindu College, Delhi University. he/she obtained LLB degree from DU’s Campus Law Center and was registered as an advocate with Delhi Bar Council in 1987. While practicing law, he/she practiced mainly in civil, criminal, constitutional, tax, trademark and service matters in the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court. On January 18, 2003, the Delhi High Court appointed him/her as Senior Advocate.

Became Chief Justice of Delhi HC on 29 September
Chief Justice Manmohan was appointed as Justice of Delhi High Court on 13 March 2008. he/she is serving as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court from 29 September 2024. Earlier, he/she was appointed the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 9 November 2023. After the notification is issued by the President, he/she will be sworn in as the Justice of the Supreme Court. he/she will serve as Justice of the Supreme Court till 16 December 2027. Justice Manmohan is the son of renowned bureaucrat and leader late Jagmohan, who was the LG of Delhi and Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
