he/she said that his/her statement removed the doubt that the government may have to stop due to opposition inside and outside the JPC. The minister said members of the opposition parties enthusiastically participated in the proceedings, gave suggestions and were part of all the regional visits except West Bengal, which were conducted to acquaint the panel members with the functioning of the Waqf bodies.

Reference to transparency in work

Minority Affairs Minister Rijiju said the bill’s provisions to regulate the functioning of Waqf bodies, which preside over properties worth several lakh crores of rupees, were also debated among the public, with over one lakh representations to the Minority Affairs Ministry. Bills were introduced in the monsoon session

In the last monsoon session, the government had introduced two bills in the Lok Sabha on August 8 – the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Muslim Waqf (Repeal) Bill – which proposed reforms in the functioning of Waqf boards and management of their properties. Earlier the minister said the notices issued to properties of Christians in Kerala and farmers in Karnataka have only highlighted the arbitrary functioning of the Waqf bodies.

It also highlights how the changes made by the UPA government to the Waqf Tribunals have given them too much power, and little accountability. Rijiju said these reforms were long overdue and necessary, as these bodies were controlled by a few Muslim elite, while the poor and a large section of the community were deprived of their benefits.
