New Delhi : The fire incident at a government hospital in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh brought back horrific memories of the Vivek Vihar incident. In Vivek Vihar, on the night of 25th May this year, 7 newborns had died due to scorching. Parents of the infants who lost their lives in the fire and the children who survived the incident say that such incidents can be stopped only if the administration shows sensitivity and gives priority to safety on the campus.

‘I don’t want to remember that incident’

Housewife Seema, who lost her twin children in a fire at the neonatal hospital, said the incident happened due to the apathy of the authorities. Seema said, “I don’t want to remember the incident in which I lost my two children. It wasn’t just one person’s fault. This was the mistake of the entire administration and the same might have happened there (in Jhansi). he/she said that unless this situation is corrected, such incidents will continue to happen.

On the midnight of 25th May, seven newborn babies were killed and five children were burnt in a fire incident at the private ‘Baby Care New Born Hospital’ located in Vivek Vihar area of East Delhi. Four of these were discharged after treatment. The police have registered an FIR and arrested the hospital owner, who is still behind bars. During investigation it was found that the number of beds in the hospital had been increased and it was being operated illegally.

According to police investigation, there were no emergency exit gates in the hospital. Additionally, fire extinguishing equipment was not working and the fire alarm and water sprinkler systems were also not working properly, it said. Police also found a large number of small and big oxygen cylinders on the premises, indicating ‘illegal refilling’. Madhuraj’s child was saved in the fire. he/she said that seeing the pictures of the Jhansi incident refreshed his/her memories of the incident that happened to him/her.

Immediate action should be taken against hospitals operating illegally or without proper documentation. Many hospitals may be operating illegally or without following rules and the administration should take immediate action against them to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again.

Madhuraj, a painter by profession, said that immediate action should be taken against hospitals operating illegally or without proper documents. he/she said, “I was going to work when someone told me that there was a fire in the baby care hospital. By the time I reached there, the hospital building was completely burnt. he/she said that his/her six-day-old son was also among those admitted to the hospital. I was completely distraught as I was told that some children had died while some had been transferred to a nearby hospital. I was shown the rescued children from there and one of them was my child.

he/she said that many hospitals may be operating illegally or without following rules and the administration should take prompt action against them to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again. Deepak Gautam’s son also survived the fire. he/she said that day is forever imprinted in his/her mind.

Deepak said that my three-day-old son was admitted to the hospital. After hearing the news we reached the hospital and found that everything was burnt. For a few seconds, we thought we had lost our son but soon we heard that some newborns had been shifted to a private nursery nearby. he/she said that he/she was relieved to see his/her son there.

It is necessary for the administration to be sensitive

Deepak said that these incidents will not stop until our administration is sensitive. They need to repair and renew fire safety equipment from time to time.’ he/she said that the hospital administration should ensure that there is no illegal activity on the premises. At least 10 children died in a fire caused by a short circuit in the children’s ward of Jhansi’s Government Medical College and Hospital. Sixteen infants who were burnt in the fire are being treated.
