Army Chief is going to Nepal next week, know how are the military relations between India and Nepal


New Delhi : Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi will visit Nepal next week. The military relations between the two countries can be gauged from the fact that the armies of both the countries give the title of Honorary General to each other’s army chief. This is a tradition between the two armies. When General Dwivedi goes to Nepal, Nepal Army will also give him/her the title of Honorary General.

More than 300 soldiers will get training

Nepal has strong military ties with India. Both the countries also provide courses to each other’s army soldiers in their prestigious military institutions. According to defense sources, more than 300 soldiers of Nepal Army were trained in India this year. In this the focus was on counter insurgency, leadership development and peacekeeping. Both countries are important partners in enhancing their military capabilities. The focus of General Dwivedi’s visit will also be on the ongoing modernization in the armies of both the countries.

India-Nepal conduct joint military exercises every year. Its name is Exercise Surya Kiran. This promotes better coordination and cooperation between the two armies. The exercise focuses on counter-terrorism operations, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. The 18th edition of this exercise will be held in Nepal in December 2024. This time the scope and complexity of the exercise will be further increased, which will further improve the operational synergy between the two armies.

Large number of former Indian soldiers in Nepal

Nepal has a large population of Indian ex-servicemen, which plays an important role in strengthening relations between the two countries. Nepal is home to more than 88,000 Indian Army veterans, who contribute actively to various sectors such as education, healthcare and rural development. However, ever since the Agniveer Scheme of recruitment in the Indian Army has been implemented, Gorkhas from Nepal are not able to be recruited in the Indian Army.

Army Chief will visit Muktinath Temple!

According to defense sources, General Upendra Dwivedi may also visit Shri Muktinath Temple in Nepal. India’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat also wanted to visit this temple. In his/her memory, a bell, named ‘Bipin Bell’, was installed in the temple in February 2023.
