It will take time to restore trust with China… What did the Army Chief say on the LAC agreement with Dragon?

New Delhi : Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday stressed the need to rebuild trust between India and China after the recent border patrolling agreement. General Dwivedi made his/her first statement after the announcement of India-China border patrolling agreement. General Dwivedi stressed that restoring confidence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) will be a gradual process, leading to a return to the status quo of April 2020.

The Army Chief said that we are working to rebuild trust and it will take time to restore that trust. he/she described the steps for disengagement, de-escalation and buffer zone management as important to reduce tensions between the two countries. The Army Chief was speaking at an event on the theme “Decade of Transformation: The Indian Army keeping pace with the future” at the United Service Institution.

We are trying to restore trust. How will trust be restored? It will be restored when we can see each other and convince each other. And we need to assure each other that we are not intruding into the buffer zone that has been created.

The process will be completed in phases

The Army Chief said that this process will happen in phases. The objective of each step will be to reduce stress. he/she said that this general management of LAC will not stop here. There are stages in this too. Referring to the buffer zone created on the LAC, General Dwivedi emphasized that trust between the two countries will be rebuilt through mutual understanding. he/she said that we are trying to restore trust. How will trust be restored? It will be restored when we can see each other and convince each other. And we need to assure each other that we are not intruding into the buffer zone that has been created.

Important agreement before BRICS conference

he/she also noted that the ongoing patrolling activities provide an opportunity for both sides to reassure each other. he/she said patrolling gives you that kind of leverage, and as trust is re-established, other steps will follow. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday announced that an agreement has been reached regarding patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the India-China border area.

The announcement was made ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kazan, Russia for the 16th BRICS summit scheduled from October 22 to October 24. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said the agreement was the result of extensive discussions with Chinese negotiators at both the diplomatic and military levels over the past several weeks.
