What does the report card of the last election say?
The last assembly elections were fought by BJP with Shiv Sena (Undivided) and then BJP had fielded its candidates on 165 seats out of which BJP candidates won on 105 seats. This time also BJP wants to contest elections on at least 165 seats. There are total 288 seats in Maharashtra Assembly. Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena wants at least 80 seats but the message being given to them by BJP is that despite being the largest party, BJP made them the CM, so now they should at least sacrifice some seats. BJP leaders say that Shinde’s party can contest elections on about 70 seats. Ajit Pawar’s party is also demanding 50-55 seats but BJP sources say that they may get less seats than this. BJP also has a Central Election Committee meeting on Wednesday night to decide the candidates for Maharashtra.
What speculations are going on in the political circles?
BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde should be ready to make sacrifices in terms of seat sharing for the assembly elections as the BJP has done to keep the alliance intact. According to the news agency, Bawankule told a TV channel that ‘Chief Minister Eknath Shinde should definitely work with an open mind and be ready to make sacrifices. We have also made sacrifices to maintain the alliance. It is clear that BJP’s aim is to contest elections on those seats which we had earlier.
