CAQM pulled up, ordered to give affidavit… Supreme Court pronounces fiercely on Parali case


New Delhi: The matter related to stubble burning was heard in the Supreme Court. During this, the Supreme Court pulled up the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The court has drawn criticism for not making any effort to enforce its own directive to stop stubble burning. A Supreme Court bench led by Justice AS Oka has said that the CAQM has not initiated even a single coercive action against stubble burning in the National Capital Region of Delhi (ACR).

What did the Supreme Court say

The Supreme Court said that their meeting was held on August 29 and out of total 11 members, five members were present in the meeting. But there was no discussion regarding implementation of CAQM’s own directive. The Supreme Court has pulled up the Punjab and Haryana governments for taking nominal compensation from the farmers burning stubble on behalf of these states.

Next hearing on October 16

The Supreme Court has asked the Center and CAQM to file affidavits in this matter within a week and has fixed October 16 for the next hearing. The Supreme Court has pulled up CAQM and asked it to submit an affidavit. The court said that CAQM did not make any effort to enforce its own instructions to stop stubble burning.

Supreme Court had raised questions on stubble in 2023

Last year, on December 13, 2023, the Supreme Court had said that burning of stubble was adversely affecting the air quality in Delhi and NCR. In such a situation, burning of stubble must be stopped. The Supreme Court had said that there is a need for judicial monitoring in this matter so that people do not have to face this situation every year. The air quality in the capital Delhi deteriorates every year during the winter season and a hearing is going on in the Supreme Court in this matter.
