Situation stable but not normal…

On the ongoing military standoff between China and India in eastern Ladakh, the Army Chief said that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the region is stable, but sensitive and not normal. What does India want?

The military standoff between the two armies began in early May 2020. There was tension in relations between the two countries after the fierce clash in Galwan Valley in June 2020. Both sides have removed many troops from the standoff points, but despite this, a complete solution to the border dispute has not yet been reached. India has been continuously saying that unless there is peace in the border areas, its relations with China cannot be normal. So far, 21 rounds of Corps Commander level talks have been held between the two sides to resolve the deadlock. India is pressurizing the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to withdraw troops from Depsang and Domchok areas. The two sides held the last round of high-level military talks in February.

Doval’s conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister

Last month, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in St. Petersburg, Russia with a focus on finding an early resolution to the dispute. In the meeting held on the sidelines of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) countries summit, both sides agreed to act ‘with urgency’ and intensify their efforts to completely withdraw troops from the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.
