Growth without employment between 2014 and 2024? How much strength is there in this claim of Congress?

New Delhi : Congress has raised questions regarding economic development during the last 10 years of Modi government. During this period, Congress has also raised questions regarding the central government’s statistics regarding employment. Congress general secretary and communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh on Monday rejected the central government’s claims of creating eight crore employment opportunities between 2021 to 2024 and adding 6.2 crore net subscribers to the EPFO database. Jairam Ramesh said that 2014–24 has seen “job loss”.

Why question the government’s claim?

Sharing the statement on social media platform Jairam Ramesh said that amid the U-turns and scams in the last few months of this faltering government, the non-organic PM and his/her drummers have tried to find some solace in its economic record. The government claims to create 8 crore employment opportunities between 2021 and 2024.

he/she said that this claim initially emerged from RBI KLEMS data, which we had earlier refuted on July 15, 2024. The government’s spin doctors have now gathered another data that 6.2 crore net subscribers have joined the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) database between September 2017 and March 2024. Both claims are based on half-truths.

new definition of employment

Jairam Ramesh further said that to justify its claim of 8 crore new jobs, the government has adopted a broad definition of employment without capturing the quality and circumstances of employment. She said a large part of the claimed employment growth is due to unpaid domestic work done by women being recorded as employment. he/she said that this is not creation of new jobs. Jairam Ramesh said that the title ‘8 crore new jobs’ also eliminates the discussion on the quality of jobs.

The Congress leader said that amid the poor economic environment, the share of salaried, formal employment in the labor market has declined. he/she further explained that workers are moving to low-productivity informal and agricultural jobs, which KLEMS is recording as job creation.

Raghuram Rajan had also expressed concern

Earlier, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan had also expressed concern over the lack of jobs being created in comparison to India’s economic growth. Former RBI Governor said that despite 7 percent economic growth, there are less jobs in India. he/she had given the example of the number of candidates for vacant posts in some states. his/her suggestion was that the government should focus on labor intensive industries to increase employment. Rajan says that capital-intensive industries are growing faster in India, but this is not the case with labour-intensive industries.
