What is insulin and how is it made in the body? When is the need to take it, know these things

Insulin hormone is secreted in the human body by a gland called pancreas. It plays an important role in controlling the blood sugar level in the human body. Our body uses glucose to get energy. Therefore, when we eat food, it first breaks down into glucose.

The insulin hormone helps transport glucose into our cells. The main function of insulin is to ensure that glucose reaches every cell of the body through our blood so that they can use it for energy. If insulin is not present in our body in sufficient quantity or does not work properly then the amount of glucose in the blood starts increasing, due to which the condition of high blood sugar i.e. hyperglycemia starts arising.

Dr BK Aggarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine, Saroj Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi,Lack of insulin can cause many diseases in the body. When the body is not able to produce insulin in sufficient quantity, the cells of the body are not able to use insulin effectively and the person develops diabetes. It is very important for insulin to work effectively to control blood sugar level, otherwise problems like kidney disease, blindness and heart disease occur due to excess blood sugar.

insulin deficiency diseases

Lack of insulin causes the problem of diabetes. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and type 2. When the body is unable to produce insulin at all, the problem of type 1 diabetes arises. Due to lack of insulin, the body’s immune system starts attacking the beta cells of the pancreas, causing them to get destroyed. When insulin is produced in the body but the cells of the body are not able to respond to it properly, then the problem of type 2 diabetes arises. The problem of type 2 diabetes is linked to unhealthy lifestyle and obesity. For women suffering from PCOD and PCOS, it is important to pay attention to insulin sensitivity. Otherwise insulin gradually becomes more effective in their body. As a result, serious diseases like diabetes can occur.

heart stroke
nihs According to this, if insulin is not secreted properly in the body then the amount of sugar in the blood increases and it slowly starts accumulating in the arteries. Due to this, blood does not circulate properly in the body and risks like heart disease and stroke start increasing.

kidney failure
Due to uncontrolled insulin secretion in the body, excess blood sugar can damage our kidneys, due to which there is a risk of kidney failure.

high blood pressure
Lack of insulin can increase blood pressure, causing symptoms of high blood pressure. Also the risk of heart and kidney diseases increases. For women suffering from PCOD and PCOS, it is important to pay attention to insulin sensitivity. Otherwise insulin gradually becomes more effective in their body. As a result, serious diseases like diabetes can occur.

types of insulin
Insulin supplements can be taken to balance the amount of insulin in the body. Classification of insulin can be done on many grounds. There are many types of insulin but on the basis of speed and time of action there are four types of insulin.

types of insulin

long acting insulin
When insulin works for a long time in the body, it is called long acting insulin. This is gradually observed after injection. It is taken once or twice a day, after which it can keep blood sugar levels under control throughout the day or even longer. This is the longest acting insulin of all types.

rapid acting insulin
It is also known as fast acting insulin. This insulin is helpful in controlling the blood sugar level in the person’s body. This insulin works fastest and is taken before or with meals. It can be used in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

intermediate acting insulin
It is an insulin used for diabetes patients. This insulin helps keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. It works slowly in the body. It shows its effect a few hours after injecting it. Its effect remains for about twenty-four hours.

short acting insulin
This insulin works slightly slower than rapid acting insulin and is taken 30 minutes before meals. After taking it, it can show effect after half an hour. Its effect lasts for about 6 to 8 hours. It helps in controlling the sugar that comes with food in the body.

Does insulin increase after eating?

  • To keep insulin stable in the body, it is necessary to consume essential substances and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
  • Proper eating habits are very important to maintain the correct level of insulin. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli etc. are beneficial in increasing insulin levels and keep blood sugar under control. Eating fruits like blackberries also improves insulin levels. Along with this, consuming foods rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants increases insulin sensitivity and keeps blood sugar level under control. Nuts, grapes, oranges etc. are good sources of this.

Make changes in lifestyle

  • To increase insulin sensitivity, it is necessary to make several changes in lifestyle. If someone’s lifestyle is not good then insulin secretion can be affected. Stress increases insulin resistance in the body. When a person is under stress, a hormone called cortisol starts increasing in the body and it has a bad effect on insulin. Therefore, try to keep stress away as much as possible. Stress gives rise to many diseases. To manage stress, take help of yoga, meditation and breathing exercises.
  • Exercise and physical activity are essential to maintain healthy insulin levels. Many problems can be solved by doing regular exercise every day. Swimming, walking, running and yoga for 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and evening can help us in controlling blood sugar. It is important to get adequate amount of sleep. Insufficient sleep can also increase insulin resistance. Insulin levels can be balanced by taking 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.
