Legendary opener; who got out at number 10 twice, remained unbeaten 3 times, gave tips to Ganguly before debut

New Delhi. In cricket, it is very difficult for a batsman to carry the bat after starting the innings. In the 147-year history of Test cricket, only about 50 batsmen have been able to do this. Batsmen like Sunil Gavaskar, Mudassar Nazar, Mike Atherton and Mark Taylor were famous for playing long innings after getting set on the wicket, but these four have also been able to do this only once each. In red ball cricket, so far two batsmen have returned to the pavilion 3 times while remaining not out after starting the innings. West Indies opener Desmond Haynes was the first to do this.

Not only this, apart from this, Haynes came in as an opener in both the innings of a Test and was out at the last i.e. at number 10. If he/she had returned unbeaten in both or any one of these innings, this record would have been in his/her name more than 3 times. Haynes’ record of ‘carrying the bat’ 3 times in Tests was later equaled by South Africa’s Dean Elgar. Coincidentally, the names of both these batsmen start with the English letter ‘D’.

Hans did this feat twice against Pakistan

One of the best batsmen of West Indies Desmond Haynes Haynes first achieved the feat of ‘carrying the bat’ against Pakistan in the Karachi Test in November 1986. Opening the innings with Gordon Greenidge in the second innings of the match, he/she remained unbeaten on 88 runs, during which the entire Caribbean team was out for 211 runs. During this time Haynes faced 289 balls and hit 4 fours.

In August 1991, in the Leeds Test against England, opener Haynes returned to the pavilion unbeaten. The West Indies team’s first innings collapsed at 176 runs and Haynes, who opened with Phil Simmons, remained unbeaten at 75 runs (198 balls, 8 fours). For the third and last time, he/she remained unbeaten after opening the innings against Pakistan in the Port of Spain Test in April 1993. In the second innings of the Test, the West Indies team was all out at 382 runs, in which Haynes opened the innings and remained unbeaten by scoring 143 runs with the help of 20 fours and a six in 288 balls.

he/she was out as the last batsman in both innings of a Test
Haynes, who remained unbeaten 3 times after opening the innings in Tests, was dismissed at number 10 in both innings of the Dunedin Test against New Zealand in 1980. Haynes was dismissed by Lance Cairns as the last batsman after scoring 55 runs with the help of 3 fours in 208 balls in the first innings. With his/her dismissal, the West Indies first innings ended at 140. Haynes was dismissed by left-arm fast bowler Gary Troup as the last batsman in the second innings of the West Indies. In the second innings, Haynes contributed 105 runs (323 balls, 6 fours) to the 212 runs of the West Indies team. New Zealand won this Test by one wicket, which remained exciting till the end.

Useful tips were given to Sourav Ganguly in the debut test series
Sourav Ganguly made a great start by scoring centuries in both his/her first Tests of the Indian team’s tour of England in 1996. Haynes’ tips also helped Ganguly in this success. After retiring from international cricket, Haynes was the coach of the county team Sussex at that time. When Sourav went to seek advice on scoring well on England’s wickets, Haynes advised him/her to play on the front foot. he/she also said that as a batsman you have to make sure where the off stump is so that you can leave the ball outside this stump.

Along with this, Haynes had advised Sourav to keep a positive mindset before the match. The former West Indies batsman had said that from the experience of my 20 years of international career, I advise you to always believe in your ability. Have faith that you will be successful. Sharing his/her experience, Haynes had said that the night before the match, when I used to go to bed thinking that I am going to score a century, then more than 80 percent of the time it used to happen exactly like that. Always remember in life that you become what you believe. This advice was effective for Ganguly.

Scored a century in the first and last ODI
Apart from Tests, Haynes was also a great batsman in ODIs. On 22 February 1978, Haynes made his/her ODI debut against Australia in St. John’s and made an impression by scoring 148 runs with the help of 16 fours and two sixes in the very first match. On 5 March 1994, he/she played his/her last ODI in Port of Spain. In this match against England, he/she scored 115 runs with the help of 14 fours. In both his/her debut and last ODIs, he/she played a significant role in the victory of the Indies and he/she became the Player of the Match. The record of scoring the most runs and most centuries in ODIs was once in the name of Haynes, later India’s Azharuddin left this record behind in terms of runs and Sachin Tendulkar in terms of centuries. Haynes, who scored 7 thousand 487 runs with the help of 18 centuries in 116 Tests, scored 8 thousand 648 runs with the help of 17 centuries in 238 ODIs.

Haynes’ record of returning unbeaten to the pavilion three times after opening the innings was later equalled by South Africa’s Dean Elgar. he/she remained unbeaten on 118 runs while opening the innings in the Durban Test against England in December 2015. Similarly, in the Johannesburg Test against India in January 2018 (86*) and the Cape Town Test against Australia in March 2018, Elgar opened the innings and returned to the pavilion unbeaten on 141 runs till the end.
