Unique Records: Players who got out at 0 twice in a Test and also took 10 wickets, Indian bowler included

New Delhi. There have been many players in international cricket who have proved their bowling prowess across the world and have been the hero of many memorable victories of the team. However, batting has been the weak link for most of them. Some even have an embarrassing batting record and a splendid bowling record in the same Test. This record is of a ‘pair’ (0 in both innings) and a 10-wicket haul in the same Test. So far, 11 players have made it to this special club in Test cricket. England’s George Lohmann was the first to do so in 1896.

After Lohmann, 10 more players have registered this special record in their name, which includes one player each from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan is the only player to have registered his/her name in this ‘special club’ twice. Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and India’s Bhagwat Chandrasekhar have also achieved the feat of taking 10 wickets along with making a ‘pair’ in a Test.

In this test held in January 1975, Underwood took 7 wickets for 113 runs in Australia’s first innings and then took 4 wickets for 102 runs in the second innings but failed to open his/her account in both the innings. However, this performance of traditional style left-arm spinner Underwood could not make England win. The Australian team was successful in winning this match by 163 runs.

Grimmett equalled Lohmann against England
In 1930, Australia’s legbreak bowler Clarence Grimmett equaled Lohmann’s record. In the Nottingham Test against England, Grimmett could not score more than 0 in both the innings but after taking 5 wickets for 107 runs in England’s first innings, he/she also took 5 wickets for 94 runs in the second innings. In the match, he/she took 10 wickets for 201 runs. However, despite this performance of Grimmett, Australia had to face defeat by 93 runs in the match.

After Grimmett, Australia’s Shane Warne succeeded in making this ‘unique’ record in 2002 and Mitchell Johnson in 2010. Legbreak bowler Warne was out on ‘duck’ in both the innings while batting in the Test against Pakistan held in October 2002 at Neutral Venue, Colombo, but he/she took 7 wickets for 94 runs in Pakistan’s first innings and 4 wickets for 94 runs in the second innings. his/her bowling in the match (11 wickets for 188 runs) played an important role in Australia’s 43-run victory.

Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Johnson performed like Grimmett and Warne in the 2010 Hamilton Test against New Zealand. he/she could not open his/her account in both the innings of Australia but after taking 4 wickets for 59 runs in New Zealand’s first innings, he/she took 6 wickets for 73 runs in the second innings and took a 10-wicket haul. he/she was the player of the match in Australia’s victory.
