Amid the Tirupati Laddu controversy, the discussion on the Free Temple Movement is gaining momentum, know what it is?

New Delhi : A big revelation has been made on the adulteration in the laddus of Tirupati temple of Andhra Pradesh. Fish oil and animal fat have been confirmed to be found in the Prasad. Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu had alleged in the legislature party meeting that during the previous YSRCP-led Jaganmohan Reddy government, substandard material and animal fat were used in making the holy Prasad Laddus in Tirupati’s Sri Venkateswara temple. Amidst this entire controversy, once again the demand has started rising to free temples across the country from government control.

Andhra Pradesh government released the report

On Thursday, the Andhra Pradesh government under the TDP released the laboratory report. It showed the presence of extraneous fats including lard (pork fat), tallow (beef fat) and fish oil in the ghee supplied during the YSRC regime. The analysis, conducted on July 23 after complaints about the taste of the laddu, also found fats from vegetable sources such as coconut, flaxseed, rapeseed and cotton seeds. There has been no official confirmation on the laboratory report, however, from the Andhra Pradesh government or the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the famous Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple. In June, the TDP government appointed senior IAS officer J. Shyamala Rao as the new executive officer of TTD. As part of efforts to address quality concerns, an inquiry was ordered into the problems related to the taste and texture of the laddu.

What is Free Temple Movement?

There have been movements across the country for the last decade demanding freedom from government control over temples. People demand that the government free these temples from its control. This will curb the corruption in the temple board. Many believe that the ‘Freedom of Hindu Temples’ movement is neither a new struggle started after 2014 nor is it part of a communal agenda. In post-reform India where the state is liberalizing most of its properties, companies and various sectors of the economy, temples are still under its control. People associated with the movement to free temples say that control over Hindu temples is a perfect example of ‘license permit raj’ in the religious sector.

The fight has reached the Supreme Court

Those demanding to free the temple from government control say that the Indian democratic, secular state has existed since 1947 while most Hindu temples are centuries old. The fact that they are still flourishing is a proof of how they were managed by local devotees for decades. On the other hand, the government is increasing the scope of control over temples through new laws. The fight to free temples from government control has reached the Supreme Court. The government’s control over temples has also been termed unfair by the apex court. Retired Justice SA Bobde, who was a judge in the Supreme Court, had said in 2019 in reference to the Jagannath Temple in Puri that I do not understand why government officials should run the temple? According to an estimate, the government controls about 4 lakh temples across the country. Earlier in the year 2014, the Supreme Court had given a verdict to free the Nataraja Temple of Tamil Nadu from government control.

History of Laddu

The ‘laddu prasadam’ offered at the holy temple of Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh is famous for its unique taste, which is loved by devotees across India and abroad. These iconic laddus are carefully prepared in the temple kitchen, known as ‘pottu’. The Tirupati laddu offering is over 300 years old. It started in 1715. In 2014, Tirupati laddus received GI status. This prohibited anyone else from selling laddus under that name. TTD prepares and distributes around 3 lakh laddus in Tirumala every day. The sale of laddus brings in revenue of around Rs 500 crore annually.
