Studying in Canada has become difficult, Trudeau government’s new ‘order’ has created a ruckus, this announcement was made for foreign students

Canada Visa Restrictions: Due to Canada’s liberal visa policies, foreign students and workers from all over the world were coming here to work. However, now the government has started changing the visa rules. Not only this, but the rising inflation in Canada has also disillusioned foreign students and workers. But the government is not learning any lessons from this. Canada announced on Wednesday that it is going to reduce the number of temporary residents in the country even more. Canada has said that it will further reduce the number of study permits issued to foreign students coming to study here. Rules for foreign workers will also be tightened, which will directly affect Indians. Lakhs of Indian students go to Canada for studies, for whom it will be difficult to get a study visa. Not only this, but a large number of Indians also go to Canada to work, who will now find it difficult to get a visa.

What has Justin Trudeau said?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on social media platform X, “We are issuing 35% fewer international study permits this year. Next year this number will be reduced by another 10%.” he/she said, “Immigration is essential to our country’s economy, but when some people exploit the system and take advantage of students, we will take action.” The Trudeau government has previously reduced the number of study permits, which has led to fewer foreign students coming to Canada.

How many work permits were issued in Canada this year?

According to data from the Immigration Department, Canada issued 5,09,390 study permits in 2023. In the first seven months of 2024, 1,75,920 foreign students were granted study permits. The government’s new move will increase the number of study permits issued in 2025 to 4,37,000. Changes in Canada’s visa rules will also limit work permit eligibility for spouses of some students and temporary foreign workers.

Impact of change in Canadian rules on Indians

Canada is a popular destination for studies among Indian students. According to data released by the Government of India last month, around 13.35 lakh Indian students are studying abroad, of which around 4.27 lakh are in Canada. Between 2013 and 2022, the number of Indian students going to Canada for studies has seen a massive increase of 260 per cent.

According to a Reuters report, about 40 percent of foreign students in Canada are from India. Due to the Canadian government’s move to cut down on study permits, Indian students will now have to choose other options like the US, UK or Australia. It will become difficult for them to get a Canadian visa.
