Quad, address at the United Nations, bilateral meetings… what is special in PM Modi’s 3-day US visit

New Delhi: The government on Tuesday announced PM Modi’s three-day visit to the US. The PM’s visit will begin with the fourth Quad summit hosted by US President Joe Biden in Delaware. Not only this, PM Modi will also address the future United Nations General Assembly summit in New York on September 23. Modi’s visit also includes several bilateral meetings.A glimpse of Modi’s visit
While in New York, PM Modi will address a gathering of the Indian community on September 22 and interact with CEOs of leading US companies to promote greater collaboration between the two countries in cutting-edge areas of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and biotechnology. Modi is also expected to interact with active think tanks and other stakeholders in the India-US bilateral landscape, the government said in a statement.

While India was keen to host the Quad summit on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, the US proposed to hold it in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden’s hometown. Following the request, India has agreed to host the next Quad summit in 2025. This also paves the way for an early visit of the next US President to India.

Peace is needed not war
According to India, at the Wilmington summit, the leaders will review the progress achieved by the Quad bloc over the past year and set the agenda for the year ahead to assist countries in the Indo-Pacific region meet their development goals and aspirations. The last Quad summit took place in Hiroshima in May 2023 on the margins of the G7 summit. Apart from a focus on the Indo-Pacific, a range of issues are expected to be discussed, including efforts to ensure supply chain security and resilience and the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. At the Hiroshima summit, the leaders had reiterated Modi’s remarks that this was not an era of war and sought a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter.

Modi will also address the Future Summit at the United Nations General Assembly during his/her visit. Several global leaders are expected to attend the summit, which has been themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow”. During the summit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and discuss issues of mutual interest, the government said.
