Study in Canada: Will Canadian colleges become ‘bankrupt’? Universities are stuck due to Trudeau government’s decision, understand how

Canada Study Permit Rejected: Students from all over the world, including Indians, are gradually getting disillusioned with Canada. Ever since the limit on issuing study permits has been imposed by the government of Prime Minister Justice Trudeau, students are taking admission in other countries instead of Canada. Due to this, Canada is also losing thousands of crores of rupees. Justin Trudeau’s government announced in January that it is temporarily banning study visas for international students. According to the country’s Immigration Minister Mark Miller, due to the ban on issuing study visas, only 3,64,000 study permits will be issued in 2024. This number is 35% less than in 2023. A report by ICEF Monitor quoted ApplyBoard as saying, “The number of new study permit applications processed by the Government of Canada in the second quarter of 2024 has declined by 54 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023.”

How many people can get Canada study visa in 2024?

The report estimates that the number of applications processed will fall by 39 percent in 2024. If this situation remains, only about 2,30,000 new study permits will be issued in the second half of 2024. The ICEF Monitor report states, “If the study permit processing estimate above is correct and the study permit approval rate remains at 51%, it is estimated that only about 2,31,000 new study permits will be granted in 2024.”

According to the ICEF Monitor report, “4,36,000 new study permits were issued in 2023. If around 2,31,000 new study permits are issued this year, there will be a decrease of 47% compared to last year.”

Students are leaving Canada and moving to these countries

The report states that students are now moving away from Canada. The new rules are creating confusion. ApplyBoard estimates that there will be a 50% reduction in study permits for limited post-secondary programs and a 24% reduction for cap-free programs in 2024. Students who are moving away from Canada are now turning to the US, Germany, Italy and other countries to study. Australia and Britain are also becoming very popular among students.

How much will Canada lose if international students don’t come?

Foreign students spend a total of 37.3 billion Canadian dollars (about Rs 2.4 lakh crore) on tuition fees, accommodation and food in Canada. This figure is for 2022. Not only this, but foreign students also contribute to small jobs like working in restaurants and delivery in the country. If the number of foreign students in Canada decreases, it will have a direct impact on its economy.

If we assume that the number of foreign students reduces to half as compared to last year, in such a situation Canada will have to suffer a loss of at least Rs 1 to 1.25 lakh crore.
