Jabalpur High Court seeks response from Censor Board on Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’, PIL against its release

Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut Kangana Ranaut is in the headlines. She has suffered a major setback over her film ‘Emergency’. There was already a controversy over this movie and then the Censor Board (CBFC) stopped its certificate. In such a situation, this film which was to be released on 6 September 2026 was postponed. On one hand, Kangana is very disappointed, on the other hand, the Jabalpur High Court has sought a reply from the CBFC on this matter. The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Central Government and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming movie ‘Emergency’. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Judge Vinay Saraf has asked the officials to clarify whether the film has been certified yet or not.

The order of Punjab and Haryana High Court is also being considered

The High Court also noted the Centre’s recent submission before the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the film has not yet been certified. Justice Sachdeva said, “The board is considering this in view of the order passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. There is a possibility that if there is any scene which needs to be edited or deleted… then it is possible that the film will not release on the 6th.”

‘The trailer shows Amritdhari Sikhs killing people’

This public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed by Jabalpur Sikh Sangat and Guru Singh Sabha Indore. Advocate Narendra Pal Singh Rupra, representing the petitioners, argued that the petitioners are representing several gurdwaras, schools and colleges in Jabalpur and Indore. Advocate Narendra Pal Singh Rupra said that the Cinematograph Act has been violated in this case, because the trailer of the film shows Amritdhari Sikhs killing people and there is a dialogue that ‘You want votes, we want Khalistan.’

‘Can’t differentiate between Hindus and Sikhs’

The lawyer said, ‘We have small children wearing patkas and going to school and… they are small children and other people tease them by calling them Khalistani. It is the pride of every Sikh to join the Indian Army. There are 1430 pages in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the word Ram has been used 2500 times… The entire history of Sikhs is so mixed with Hindus that you cannot differentiate between Hindus and Sikhs.’ The court said that it has not seen the trailer yet and sometimes the real situation is not shown in it. However, lawyer Narendra Pal Singh Roopra said that the trailer was very famous and Sikhs were shown as separatists and cruel in it.

The judge said- Sikhs helped people all over the world

Judge Sachdeva said, ‘On the contrary… during the first and second lockdown, Sikhs in Delhi and across the world were at the forefront of helping these people. They were at the forefront of providing food and shelter to these people and even in Delhi there was a problem of oxygen… all the gurdwaras had oxygen supply, they arranged it from far and wide.’

Claims of scenes targeting Sikh community

The court then said that notice has to be served on the respondents (who have been sued), including the filmmakers, and listed the matter for urgent hearing on Tuesday. Meanwhile, in response to a similar PIL alleging that the film contained scenes targeting the Sikh community, the Centre told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 31 that the film has not been certified yet.

Assurance to the court- no one’s feelings will be hurt

It was submitted that ‘all the guidelines and all necessary precautions given for certifying films will be taken into consideration.’ The court was also assured that the CBFC will ensure that the content does not hurt the sentiments of any community, including the Sikh community. A division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Khetrapal took note of the assurance given by the Centre and further said that even after certification, any aggrieved person can approach the CBFC for a review of the decision by the Revising Committee.

Kangana is upset because the film did not get a certificate

On the other hand, with ‘Emergency’ not getting a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and its release on September 6 in limbo, actress Kangana Ranaut on Monday said that it is very disappointing and unjust that censorship is only for her film. Kangana said that there is censorship only on those who make films on historical facts but violence and nudity can be shown.

Kangana Ranaut asked- how much will we be intimidated?

Kangana said, ‘This is a very disappointing situation. I am very disappointed with the conditions in my country. How much will we be intimidated? I have made this film with a lot of self-respect, that is why CBFC cannot point to any controversy. They have stopped my certificate, but I am determined to release the uncut version of the film. I will fight in the court and get the film released without any cuts.’ It is known that the film ‘Emergency’ will not be released this Friday, because the filmmakers have not yet received the certificate from the censor board.

Shiromani Akali Dal had protested

Shiromani Akali Dal had sent a legal notice to the CBFC last Friday demanding a ban on the release of Kangana Ranaut’s film. The party claims that the film can ‘incite communal tension’ and ‘spread misinformation’.
