New Delhi : Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi will visit Manipur to review the security situation there. According to sources, General Dwivedi will hold a meeting with senior officers of Assam Rifles on 23 and 24 August. This visit is taking place at a time when two battalions of Assam Rifles are being removed from Manipur on the instructions of the Home Ministry and CRPF battalions are being deployed in place of those two battalions.

Why is the Army Chief going to Manipur

According to sources, General Dwivedi will reach Shillong on August 23 and will talk to the officials there. The next day he/she will go to Manipur. There he/she will also hold a meeting with IGAR (Inspector General Assam Rifles) South. Out of the area of ​​Manipur from where two units of Assam Rifles are being removed, one unit falls in the area of ​​responsibility of IGAR South and the other unit IGAR East. Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on 3 May 2023 in which more than 220 people were killed and more than 50 thousand people were displaced. The situation has still not returned to normal there. There is also a demand for a political solution to stop ethnic violence, along with this, the people of the Kuki community are demanding a Union Territory with an assembly for the hills.

Two battalions of Assam Rifles are being removed from Manipur

Amidst all this, the Home Ministry directed that two battalions of Assam Rifles be removed from Kangwai in Churachandpur and Kamchuk in KPI and replaced with CRPF battalions. People of the Kuki community of Manipur are continuously protesting against this decision, while people of the Meitei community are satisfied with this decision. Organizations of the Kuki community say that Assam Rifles are needed in the buffer zone of Manipur because they work without discrimination. The Kuki community fears that violence against them may start again if Assam Rifles are removed from there.

CRPF battalion will be deployed

According to sources, these two battalions of Assam Rifles are being removed from Manipur and sent to Arunachal Pradesh. The process of deployment of CRPF battalion in place of these two battalions of Assam Rifles in Manipur has also started (handing-taking over). At the same time, two battalions of Assam Rifles from Arunachal Pradesh have started going to Jammu and Kashmir. The first advance party left on 18 August and the second advance party left on 19 August.
