Protesters in Bangladesh called on the general public to join the ‘Long March to Dhaka’. This call was given a day after more than 100 people died in violent clashes between protesters and supporters of the ruling party in different parts of the country demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After this, Sheikh Hasina decided to resign and leave the country.

Sheikh Hasina was in power since 2009

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Sheikh Hasina left Bangabhaban for a “safe place” on Monday at around 2:30pm along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana in a military helicopter and landed at Hindon airbase in Delhi.

76-year-old Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been ruling the strategically important South Asian country since 2009.

Degree in Bengali Language from Dhanka University

Sheikh Hasina earned a BA degree in Bengali language and literature from Dhaka University. Her education laid a strong foundation for her political future.

Her political journey began during her student life. She became actively involved in the freedom movement during her student life. Later she founded the Awami League, a major political party of Bangladesh.

From primary to higher education-where did Sheikh Hasina study?

Sheikh Hasina received her education at the primary school in her village Tungipara. When her family moved to Dhaka, she also received education at Azimpur Girls’ School and Begum Badrunnussa Girls’ College.

Sheikh Hasina enrolled for a graduation degree at Eden College. She was elected vice-president of the student union at Eden College between 1966 and 1967. Hasina studied Bengali literature at Dhaka University, from which she graduated in 1973.

Why did violence erupt in Bangladesh?
