So is there really a threat to the Modi government? Rahul Gandhi’s claim on the NDA is creating a sensation

New Delhi: Within a decade, the era of a single party majority government at the centre ended. Narendra Modi became the prime minister for the third time in a row, but his/her party BJP remained far from the magic figure of a single majority. BJP, which was limited to 240 seats, had to take the help of allies of which it has 53 seats to return to power at the centre. Congress party’s former president Rahul Gandhi, who is overjoyed with this situation, has made a big claim. he/she says that many NDA allies are in touch with him/her, i.e. the Congress party. You already understand the meaning of contact in the language of politics. If Rahul Gandhi is right, then there should be no problem in accepting that the Modi government is in danger.

Rahul claims- Modi government is very weak

Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the ruling NDA is very weak in terms of numbers and a slight disturbance could topple the government. Rahul expressed his/her views on the Lok Sabha election results in an interview to business newspaper The Financial Times. “The numbers are so low that the government is very fragile and a slight disturbance can topple it. Basically, one (NDA) ally will have to switch sides,” he/she said. he/she also claimed that some NDA allies are “in touch with us.” But who? Rahul did not name anyone but said there was a deep “disagreement” within the Modi camp.

Modi’s image has collapsed in the elections: Rahul Gandhi

The Congress leader said the Lok Sabha election results showed that there was a ‘big change in Indian politics’. he/she claimed that ‘Modi’s ideology and image have suffered a major setback’. he/she argued that a third NDA government led by Modi ‘will struggle because the factors that worked in Narendra Modi’s favour in 2014 and 2019 are missing this time’.

Speaking about the results, Gandhi said, ‘The idea that you can gain from the politics of hatred and anger has been rejected by the people of India in this election… The party that spent the last 10 years talking about Ayodhya has been wiped out in Ayodhya… What basically happened is that the basic structure of the BJP of creating religious hatred has collapsed’.

Rahul also gave himself credit for the better performance of the opposition

Rahul Gandhi also credited his/her two Bharat Jodo Yatras for improving the opposition’s performance this time. he/she said, ‘The judicial system, the media, the constitutional institutions were all closed (to the opposition). Then we decided that we have to fight on our own. Many of the ideas that made us successful in this election came from the wall that was erected against us.’

Is the government’s numerical strength really weak?

However, if we examine Rahul Gandhi’s claim of ‘we are in touch’, then NDA will get a shock from at least 21 MPs, only then Modi government can fall. 272 is required for majority. Out of these, BJP alone has 240 seats. Therefore, BJP needs the support of only 32 MPs from its allies to save the government. At present, allies have 53 MPs.

These include 14 MPs from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu’s party TDP and 12 MPs from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party JDU. If both of them leave the NDA together, the total number of MPs will decrease by 26. That is, five more than the figure of 21 needed to topple the government. But can Naidu and Nitish give a shock to Modi? Anything can happen in politics. Rahul’s claim will continue to be tested until something like this happens.
