NEET: This time no government college even with high marks! Students are worried about MBBS seats and fees

NEET 2024 MBBS Admission Government Colleges vs Private Colleges: Why are students worried about their National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) rank? The competition for 55,000 government seats out of more than 1,8000 MBBS seats in more than 700 medical colleges depicts the extremely tough race of medical education. Due to the quality of government colleges and the low number of seats for affordable education, many students either take a gap year and appear for the NEET exam for the second or third time or are forced to take courses like BAMS or BHMS or leave for affordable education abroad.

Many students say that Well Amidst all this difficult preparation, this time’s result has shocked them and they have lost their faith in the National Testing Agency (NTA).

‘Such a high cutoff! You won’t get a government seat’

Delhi student Mohsin Raza got 640 marks out of 720 in NEET UG exam, but his/her rank was around 38 thousand. Demanding re-NEET exam, Mohsin says, with this score last year, the rank would have been between 7-8 thousand and he/she would have got admission in a government college. My dream is to become a doctor, but now I am just afraid…

Sushil, a student from Delhi, says, “My rank is around 47 thousand with 631 marks. How did the cutoff go so high? The paper must have been leaked. Last year, the government seats were closed with 610 marks and I was left with a few marks. This time I had full hopes but it was dashed. If NEET is not held again, I will have to think of something else. My family cannot afford the fee of Rs 70-80 lakh.”

MBBS Fees Private College: Private seats are very expensive

A parliamentary committee report on medical education this year says that there were 56,193 government seats for MBBS in 2023, while more than 11 lakh students qualified the exam. According to this, more than 10 lakh students have the option of private medical colleges, where the fees range from Rs 1 to 1.5 crore.

The second option is to study MBBS abroad. Every year many students go to countries like Ukraine, Russia, China to study medicine, which is much cheaper than private colleges in India.

NEET Grace Marks: How are grace marks awarded in NEET

Amidst this tension among students, many petitions have reached the court. Alakh Pandey, CEO of ‘Physics Wala’, who filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding the NEET result, says, after a lot of pressure, NTA told that 1563 students were given grace marks. But on what basis? A child is getting 720 marks with grace marks and the one who studied hard throughout the year is left behind. We want the truth to come out, that is why we have gone to the Supreme Court.

Why is the paper leak case being hidden, why is it not being investigated? How were grace marks awarded for the loss of time? Students want to know all these truths. More than 23 lakh students are appearing in NEET, many try very hard to get a seat in their dream medical college. In this situation, there should be no option other than transparency, fairness and justice.
