Brothers who played together in T20 WC, one pair each from India and Pakistan included


New Delhi. ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be organized next month jointly hosted by West Indies and America. The opening match of the tournament will be between America and Canada on June 1, while the title match will be held on June 29. The T20 World Cup has been held 8 times so far in which West Indies and England have achieved the distinction of becoming champions twice each, while India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia have become champions once each.

So far, some pairs of brothers have been seen playing together in the T20 World Cup, which include India’s Pathan Brothers – Irfan and Yusuf, Pakistan’s Akmal Brothers – Kamran and Umar, apart from Australia’s Michael Hussey and David Hussey, South Africa’s Albie and Morne and New Zealand. K Brendon and Nathan McCullum are the leaders. Let’s look at such major pairs..

Irfan and Yusuf Pathan

Irfan and Yusuf Pathan are the first pair of brothers to play together in the T20 World Cup. Elder brother Yusuf was included in the Indian team of T20 World Cup 2007, 2009 and 2010, while Irfan was included in 2007, 2009 and 2012. Both brothers played for India as all-rounders. Irfan was a useful lower order batsman along with being a left-arm bowler while Yusuf was a right-arm batsman and off-break bowler. Both brothers played in the final match of the 2007 T20 World Cup against Pakistan. Irfan took three wickets for 16 runs in 4 overs in the final and was the ‘Player of the Final’ while ‘Big Brother’ Yusuf scored 15 runs. Both of them also played together in three out of five matches of the 2009 T20 World Cup in India. Irfan has 16 wickets in 15 matches in the T20 World Cup. Irfan played 24 T20Is for India while Yusuf played 22 T20Is. India’s Pandya brothers – Hardik and Krunal have also played together in T20I but they have not yet got a chance to play together in the T20 World Cup.

Kamran and Umar Akmal

Kamran Akmal played the 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cup on behalf of the Pakistani team, while his/her younger brother Umar Akmal played the 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cup. As a wicketkeeper batsman, Kamran scored 524 runs in 30 matches of the T20 World Cup. On the other hand, Umar scored 486 runs in 20 matches at an average of 34.71.

Nathan and Brendon McCullum
The pair of McCullum brothers Nathan and Brendon McCullum of New Zealand played together in five T20 World Cups. Among the two brothers, the younger brother Brendan gained more fame in cricket. he/she was a part of the Kiwi team of 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cup as a wicketkeeper batsman. In 25 matches of the tournament, he/she scored 637 runs with the help of one century and two half-centuries. Elder brother Nathan played as an off-break bowler, taking 23 wickets in 22 matches at an average of 17.34. Nathan played 63 T20Is and Brendon played 71 T20Is.

Albie and Morne Markel

South Africa’s Markel brothers – Albie Morkel and Morne Morkel have also played together in the T20 World Cup. Elder brother Albie remained a part of the team as an all-rounder. he/she was a right-handed batsman and medium pace bowler while Morne used to bowl right-handed fast. Both Albie and Morne were members of the South African team in five T20 World Cups from 2007 to 2014. During this period, Morne took 24 wickets in 17 matches. Albie scored 308 runs in 25 matches of T20 World Cup.

Michael and David Hussey
Australia’s Hussey brothers Michael and David Hussey played the 2009, 2010 and 2012 T20 World Cup together. Both were excellent batsmen in the shorter format. Michael Hussey played his/her first World Cup in 2007. Till 2012, he/she scored 437 runs in 21 matches of four T20 World Cups at an average of 54.62. David Hussey scored 234 runs in 10 matches at an average of 26. Apart from the Hussey brothers, Shaun and Mitchell Marsh of Australia have also played in T20I but Shaun could never be a part of the T20 World Cup team.

dwayne and darren bravo
West Indies cricketers Dwayne and Darren Bravo are half brothers. Dwayne played international cricket as an all-rounder and younger brother Darren as a left-handed batsman. Both played together in the 2012 T20 World Cup. Elder brother Dwayne, besides taking 27 wickets in 34 T20 World Cup matches between 2007 and 2021, scored 530 runs at an average of 21.20. The only World Cup of 2012 was also full of disappointment for Darren and he/she could score only 16 runs in two matches.
