New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed the importance of the recent Chabahar port agreement between India and Iran. Along with this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed gratitude towards both the leaders by thanking Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian. Both these leaders died in a helicopter crash a day earlier. The Foreign Minister said on Monday that both these people had played an important role in completing the agreement. Speaking at the Chabahar port, Jaishankar said that we were trying to reach an agreement with Iran for almost 20 years. We could have made a short-term agreement because there were a lot of problems on their side. But in recent months, thanks to those two people, the President of Iran and the Foreign Minister of Iran, who unfortunately died in a helicopter crash yesterday. Due to his interest and initiative, we were able to finalize a long-term agreement. This is very important because it is one of the big things related to the Global Connectivity Corridor.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash on Sunday. The Iranian government confirmed the death of these people on Monday. Nine people, including the two, were killed in the accident that occurred in a remote mountainous area in northwest Iran. Highlighting the significance of this development, Jaishankar stressed that the Chabahar port agreement goes beyond its immediate role as a port. It marks a broader shift towards increased connectivity, with India at the center of this transformational corridor.

Chabahar Agreement part of change

The External Affairs Minister said that India’s position will be at the center of the entire issue related to Chabahar Port. We will benefit from this. Therefore the Chabahar Port Agreement is bigger than a port. This is part of a connectivity transformation we are seeing. That’s why we are so eager to move forward. He said India and Iran signed a 10-year agreement to jointly develop and manage the Chabahar port to develop strategic and economic cooperation.
