70 hours, 90 hours… can a man work like a machine… why this absurd debate?

New Delhi : Honestly, I’m sorry I can’t make you work on Sundays. I would be more than happy if I could get you to work on Sunday, because I work on Sunday also. What benefits do employees get from taking leave at home? What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? How long can wives look at their husbands? Go to office and start working. What would a common man normally think after reading these lines. What kind of mad man is he/she who is saying such things? Isn’t his/her home his/her family? Does he/she have any concern with his/her wife and children at home or not? If a man works even on Sundays, then who will do the rest of the household work? Man is not a machine but a person who keeps working seven days a week. Even if it is a machine, it also needs rest and repair. If the machine is not rested from time to time then it will also be of no use.

Work-life balance is also a thing

If a man works only 90 hours a week, what will happen to the rest of his/her life? They absolutely want to destroy the bird called work life balance. Increasing work hours will either increase productivity or increase burnout. Who will answer this question? Man’s mental health is also a thing. Due to increase in working hours, one should also think about mental health (depression, burnout). A man will work 13 hours a day, sleep 7 hours, and if it takes 2 hours to travel to and from office, he/she will have no time left. In such a situation, what will happen to his/her personal life?

What message do these big people want to send?

Actually, the above statement is from SL Subramanian, Chairman of the country’s famous company Larsen & Toubro. The company chairman is being criticized a lot on social media for this statement. For some time now, there has been a debate going on in the country regarding working hours. There is definitely some big name behind this debate. Some time ago, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy started this debate by working 70 hours a week. Now the question arises that what message do these people want to give with such a statement.

What development are you talking about?

Whenever there is talk of more working hours, its advocates cite the development of the country. In such a situation, there is a question whether more working hours is a sure guarantee of the development of the country. If this were the case, then look at the working hours of the countries which are ahead in development. Why not see working hours from the US, UK, France, Netherlands to Australia. In America, the working week is 40 hours, in UK 48 hours, Australia 38 hours, France 36 hours and in Netherlands only 29 hours are prescribed for work in a week. If working hours are less in these countries then is there no development taking place in these countries?
